2006 Cobalt SS: Should I buy?

Hi, everyone.

I am currently driving a 2005 Mazda 3 and I'm looking for a more sporty car. I am really interested in getting a Cobalt SS, but the 08-10 turbo models are out of my price range. I've been looking at the supercharged versions of the cobalt and I found some for a reasonable price. I have a few questions though. Is a 06-07 Cobalt ss/sc worth buying still? The ones I've found have around 150,000km and I'm not sure if at that point in the engines life, its lost a significant amount of power, or have any major issues. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you

Best way to know is to do a compression or leakdown test. 150000 km is nothing for these cars. Mine has over double that and runs fine. Its all about how you take care of it.

So it's not common for the superchargers to wear out and lose power? Also, if I were to get one with around 150k-170k, would it be okay to do a stage 2 kit on it? Thanks for your help.

The super chargers generally don't lose power. The compression test has to do with the engine. And if the compression test comes back looking okay then it would be a good indicator for wanting to start upgrading. If you're worried about the miles then have the engine checked out to see if it's still healthy, then boost it more(stage 2 or whatever that's a whole other thread).

The only thing that might become an issue is the timing chain guide wear/bolts snapping, which isn't very common. The more common issue is the Body Control Module (BCM) acting up and not allowing the PCM to start the car, but a lot of those problems were fixed earlier in most car's lives.

There's a couple of small maintenance items you can do to the SC if it's needed.

I bought my Ion Redline last year with 120k kms and now have 167k kms on it, bone stock, and it's been great. The supercharger lobes barely showed any wear on them too.

Is there anything else I should look for when I'm test driving the car?
