i asked about the cobalt @ Tracy chevorlet, and they said:
1) Ran out of brocures
2) Cobalts wont be comming in til March becuase of some glitch and I was wondering, whats the holdup?
3) The dealer said that this is one hot car, espically the ss... i hope that doesn't mean that there will be 20+ ss cobalts in my town. There's already enough SRT's in town (10+ Srt-4, 2 Vipers)

It would be so easy to swap a 6spd in.

I would have a hard time putting a non supported transmission in a brand new car. The would pretty much voided the whole power train promise right there.
I have a 6 spd close ratio transmission on my VFR750 after having a 5 spd on my first bike ( Hawk GT) and it's nice having the extra gear when you start moving. I figure if the car can go over 120 mph it needs to have a 6th gear or your going to be spending time outside the motors power band. Unless of course the S/C Eco 2.0 has so much power that it's not an issue. And what saab has a 6 speed, I just checked on their site (93 and 95 and 92x) and i don't see a 6 speed option for any of them.

it would be a waste as you already eat up the gears fast enough as is. this is not a high rev VTEC engine where you NEED the 6 gears to keep the engine in the powerband.
the only reason a 6 speed would be benificial would be to help fuel consumption on the freeway, otherwise it's a wast of time/effort as the saab 6spd gearing is closer together only making more shifts nescessary and not getting you anywhere faster

On a car thats capable of doing 143 mph before it's governed I think that a 6 speed would benificial. If the car was limited to 105 mph I would agree that a 6 speed is unneeded. Because you have to give away some acceleration to achieve 143 mph with a 5 spd, you could get some of that back with a 6 spd. Maybe they did the math and the torque and HP curves of the engine don't warrent the need for a 6 spd but I don't think having shifting more is a downside of a 6 spd. If you don't want to shift get an automatic. I have never driven a 6 spd car, but going from a 5 to 6 speed motorcycle it was definetly a welcome change. Many times I was on my 5 spd bike and wish I had a 6th gear to bring the revs down for high speed cruising
That said I really don't think having a 5 spd is too much of a downer for the Cobalt SS S/C at this point, but since none of us has driven it (SS S/C) yet I reserve judgement.

My 04 SVT Focus had a 6 speed and it was nice and i liked where the reverse was located. And the 143 mph limit isn't a governor, its just how fast the Pirelli Z rated tires can handle on the Cobalt SS SC, i'd like the 6 speed in the SS SC, its fun to play around with, and i know my first gear in my SVTF was really tall, i could get up to 40 in first gear, sometimes even 43-45 mph.

6Spd Will always be better then a 5spd. No matter if it's a high rpm powerband or not.
Max speed in Gears with a 6500 Redline and a 3.94 Final Drive Ratio
5Spd :
1st : 31
2nd : 62
3rd : 93
4th : 128
5th 182
6Spd :
1st : 33
2nd : 62
3rd : 95
4th : 132
5th : 168
6th : 203
See my point? 5th is actually Useable in the 6spd where it's pure OD in the 5spd.

You can pickup a Saab 6Spd for 2K
