awd cobalt?
so ive been thinking about this lately and havent really seen anything on it at all, ive tried searching and only saw one thread from 09. but has anyone looked into using the drive train from the ats or the new buick (forgot the model) i no they both use the same motor we have in our cars but how hard would it be to use the awd setup in our cars. it would be badass to have an awd turbo cobalt. i was hoping to see if anyone else has had anymore luck then i have on searching or just know more about this then me ( which isnt hard cuz im not familiar at all with awd anything) but hopefully we will see some ideas on here now.

id say someone would have to come up with a totally re engineered rear end, new hubs, suspension, axles, custom tranny set up, shifter, drive shaft, electronics, etc etc... for that much cost, i think it would be better to just buy the ats...

....anything is possible with enough money
Thing is...why the hell would you invest so much into a cobalt? I mean I love my balt to death, but for what it would take to convert to awd I'd just go buy an evo

why wouldnt you be able to use most of the stuff. i mean i dont no any of the specs on either of the other two cars but, the tranny may work same with rearend hubs and everything else the only thing i thought you may have to get custom made was a drive shaft. yea some things may need to be changed a bit but its no different then throwing an ls1 in a miata or something like that, im sure you could reuse alot of parts from one car to another. its just a matter of figuring everything out. being the first person to do it (hypothetically speaking) would prolly be a pain in the ass because there is no references or any place to get help or look anything up, but i wouldnt be surprised if since all three of them are gm cars and gm cars are never really to far off from eachother that with a little fabrication that it could be done without custom everything. thats just my thoughts tho, i may be completely wrong but. i mean if i can take a motor and trans from a 04 gto, full dash board front and rear seats , gas tank and rearend from a 02 trans am, not to mention the parts you can get from a ctsv that will fit, and bolt it all into a 3rd gen f-body (firebird or camaro ) why couldnt they have done the same with the ats buick and cobalt wen it comes to just the drivetrain?

how many sti's have you seen around? now how many awd cobalts have you seen around? its different, you dont see it.. at all. thats the point. just like the guy (dont no his name sorry) that converted or is in the process of converting his cobalt to rwd. and those of you saying just buy an ats. a base model, starting out at, minimum ats awd 2.0t starts at 44k now i dunno how much you all bout your car for but wen i got mine it had 16k miles on it and i got it out the door for 16 still under warranty so im guessing i can take an additional 28k and do that swap(not saying i will but). so the arguement of money here, is kinda null and void. just saying.

A conversion is going to have 0 resale even by cobalt standards. It also has to potential to be a total pos that rarely works.
If your goal is a race car no big deal. If you hope to drive it any decent amount it might be a bigger deal.

This has been brought up a few times and the absolute easiest way to create an AWD drive cobalt is by reengineering the rear axle to hold a large electric motor say from a leaf/volt/Prius etc etc. even then after the fabrication to the beam and suspension adding the cost of the motor, batteries and wiring etc etc you're looking at least 5-6k And when it's all said and done it will only launch better.
The next way would be by taking an eclipse GSX and completely gutting everything and swap it all into a cobalt including motor, brakes etc etc.

A friend of mine took a 07 balt with a blown engine he picked up for $1000 and paid another guy to set up the car for a Superstock class $5000 Added a 383 stroker and auto and 9 inch ford rear another $3000 +. Drives it on the street 2700 pounds 9.80 at 140 MPH on the track. $12000 total give or take a few bucks. Not AWD but gets the job done.

I agree with this guy.. Everyone says why do it? It just a cobalt.. Thats why people dont respect cobalts because the owners are afraid to do anything new. Look at the hondas. Swaps is all they do and its pretty cool and fun. Miatas and s10 pickups with ls1 engines is just as custom and makes them unique. Why not do something like this with a cobalt? Just saying because i stumbled across this thread and read the posts lol

I love the idea. If I had the resources I'd consider it. Many things would be considered if I had the resources. Not everything is about "resale value" and even practicality for that manner. It's about someone having the initiative/time/skills/resources/energy/will to take their car, modify it and make it their own.
Given the money for an ATS, I'd say go for it on the Cobalt. It'd be badass to see the progress just like the Gobalt project.

exactly if the point of anything was ever resale or practicality then we would never mod our cars because in doing so it will take away both those points. modding the car is always going to increase wear and decrease longevity of the vehicle in turn decreasing the practicality. it the fact of doing something different and new. being unique and making an awd badass cobalt lol. who wouldnt wanna see cobalt take an sti from a dig? again i dont have the money or resources to do this but if i did i would for sure look into it more. just a thought and idea to see every ones opinion on it. some may hate it some may love it i dont really vare which one your are, just wanna hear about it and see the ideas people have about it.

Hondas were all crappy eco cars....now they are respected for all the swaps that can be done with them....and it just doesnt stop...everytday I hear something new with those Honda guys finding a way to do this and that.
Anything is possible but you just need skills to make it happen

This would be awesome and who gives a crap about resale if it were done why would you get rid of it to anyone there are all kinds of cavalier, sunfire, cobalt red v8 drag cars that were originally a street car. I always thought about awed with my gtps, bolt on the transfer case from a Pontiac Montana, chevy equinox, Chevy up lander custom drive shaft and Fab a rear end in, cv axles would be the right length and rear wheel bearings are swappable. The only difficult thing I see about awed cobalt is they aren't strut style rear
