Changing oil filter without draining oil?

Can it be done on our cars? I just changed my oil and noticed my filter is leaking a little bit so I need to buy a new top for it with a new o ring and I really don't feel like draining my oil again

It can be done yes. A new filter should come with a new o ring as well.

Totally fine. Guys who run 15K Amsoil with a 5K filters do it all the time. I know I did on my HHR when I had it...

Question... you said you had to change the top as well? Meaning the cap for the oil filter right? Because I have an oil leak right there and I've changed the filter twice to replace that o-ring and it still leaks. Bought my Cobalt 8 years ago and she has 152k miles on her. This is the first time this has happened to me though. Sorry to reopen the thread.

No worries, all I had to do was replace the o ring at the top, and not tighten the **** out of it which crushes the gasket

That plastic cap may crack and leak over time to where the o-ring doesn't form a complete seal. If so just get a new cap. They shouldn't be too expensive. Not sure if you'll find that at your local NAPA or have to get it at Rock Auto (or pay extra and get it from the dealer).
