Another thing, talking about a late 90' acura/honda. That was when they peaked for build quality and dependability. Do you know how many proplems people are having with the 05's and 06's? You can't just go on how the companies have done in the past. Things change, specially in nearly 10 years.

One thing to remember, if you do any mod work on your GTi, you will void your warranty.

On the Cobalt SS/SC, you can get bigger injectors, a smaller pulley, a reflash, a honed exhast manifold, and catback exhaust.... all *WITHOUT* voiding your warranty. Toss in a higher flowing airfilter and some colder plugs (again without voiding your warranty) and you got a damn fast little ride that is still under factory warranty.

Now if somehow, someway, you decide to get an SS/SC, waiting another month or so and get the '07 model. It's the first refresh since the Cobalt came out so it'll tune or fix all the little problems you get from a brand new model car.

I just went on APR's website....Most of their advertised HP gains is FLYWHEEL hp. I was looking at a Stage 3 turbo kit for the 1.8t GTI, the older one. 340 FLYWHEEL hp...WTF, so that means it's only putting down around 280 to the wheels and cost $4,999 not including installation.

Their website does say 253 hp and 303 lb/tq but i'm guessing that is FLYWHEEL hp as well. It seems to me that it only puts you around 230 to the wheels hp wise and probably 260 wtq let alone the hefty $599 price.

Yes, exactly. Honestly I don't think this guy is going to be happy with an SS so he should get the GTi. It seems to me he is being somewhat closed minded about all.

I said 1980s not 1980. You aren't too far from my age which means you grew up in the same car mind set I did which was passed on by our family and friends and that is American cars are poorly made and foriegn cars are great. The fact is American companies have made huge strides in the last 5-10 years in quality and in the last 5 years the foriegn companies have slipped a little.

A lot of people are giving the OP a lot of crap which I think is a bit unjustified. The guy did have a bias to begin with, as did most of you when buying your car, but just because its for the competition doesn't make him any different than any of you.

With that being said, all these points here are valid. The decision really needs to be based on your prioritizing of criteria. You've gone from HP and TQ numbers to fit and finish. You aren't going to be able to satisfy all your conditions so pick the ones that are more important to you. Do you really need the fit and finsih of the vw (which to be honest is why I bought my 01 GTI but two montsh down the road it rattled worse than an old guy at a strip bar). ? Are you looking for mod-friendly? Do you want/need your warranty? What kind of handling to you want? What's your price range?

All in all, mine were modability (is that even a word?) APR, and handling and comfort. Fit and finish wasn't that big of a deal since the SS was fairly decent.

Again, you just need to prioritize what you're looking for in a car and go from there.

Have fun and enjoy the test driving...thats the best part

i really like the GTI. i love the new front and the chrome and stuff on it. my friend has one. but hes rich. other than looks i have no opinions on it. i guess go with what you can afford and what the insurance is gonna be and what looks best. most importantly, what looks best. cuz at the end of the day they all do the same thing.

Just to let you know, I can't find any SRT-4's, they stopped making the Neon line all together and a SRT-4 Caliber, well lets just say it'll tip over before it handles.

I found some WRX TRs when I was looking for around 24900ish. If that's in your budget definately give them a look because they are a ball to drive and the interior isn't too bad. You definately owe it to yourself to give them a look.

As far as the SRT, unless you can find one still new, skip it. A friend bought one used, and has had problem after problem. Also, from personal experience, Dodge techs are jackasses. They want to blame you for everything. But for the GTI or an SS/SC, go with whatever you think suits you. And what you can get the best deal on of course...(thank you gm corporate rep for that discount code ).
