There are a ton of rumors and speculations as to what GM has in store for the Cobalt, but none of us really know any concrete facts. Hell we're not even positive of the exact date the staged kits are coming out.

As far as what i could assume, they will not turbo the cobalt. They will probably turbo the 07 Solstice.
I think the cobalt will always be the supercharged car, and the new solstice will be the turbocharged car in GM's assortment.
As for the aftermarket, i can almost guarantee that there will be turbo kits for the cobalt.

The same speculation happened with the mini-cooper-S. Didn't happen though. That is kind of like saying do you think dodge would have supercharged the SRT4? A Car manufacturer wouldn't change a setup like that so soon into a car's debut. Maye the 2nd gen cobalt will have a turbo, but GM is really known for supercharged cars.

There's a great article over on .com about why GM went with the super. pretty much scwelches the super/turbo argument as far as from a manufacturer's standpoint. I'll link it here in a sec....

The supercharger is way louder than the srt4's turbo (except maybe if you have the blow off valve) besides I like the whine better. I used to like the turbo's whoosh but now i like the s/c especially with an intake, you can hear that thing a mile away

GM will turbo the Ecotech in the Solstice. So I don't see why they COULDN'T just put that motor into this car. But who knows if they will. I guess it depends on how well that motor does with the turbo and performance specs.

I think GM went in the right direction by Supercharging the SS S/C instead of Turbocharging it. With the S/C, the power is always there, no waiting for any turbine to spool and no lag whatsoever. Its practically always on the boost, which gives much better driveability than a peaky turbo system would.
Superchargers also require less maintenance and tend to last longer, and you don't need to give them a cool down period after hard driving as you have to with turbos.
And last but not least, Superchargers definitely sound better

You guys need to understand that with todays turbos, lag is practically eliminated. It usually only comes with turbos that arn't sized correctly to the engine.
They are much more effecient and will always deliver better power.
A while back, some magazine (HotRod or Enginemasters) did a build using the same engine, but running it with a turbo, centrifical blower, and roots blower. It was a very fare comparison, and the turbo won all the way around, even on torque.

thats a good report but its very biased on the side of the SC...i'm a big fan on the SC but there are some drawbacks to the SC such as drag and such on the moter...theres gotta be others....good repot none the less

Cobalt S/c 2.0 ecotec- 200lb-ft tq @ 4,400rpms
The word is the direct injection 2.0 Turbo ecotec will be used across the board . 07 Solstice GXP , 07 Sky Redline , Cobalt SS and Ion Redline by model year 2008 with the Cobalt "major refresh" and the , what supposed to be totally new (Ion<- which has been put on hold as of 12-1 ) 2006 is now the last year for the Ion .

Are you sure that is the same engine as the 2.0L Ectotec supercharged. I don't think it is, but I could be mistaken Torque peaking so low (2500 RPM) likely means it drops off in the upper rev range. I'd still take the Supercharger in my opinion. Lasts longer, lower maintenance, and sounds way better. Just my opinion though.

Also , GM performance parts has nothing to do with future product .

the solstice GXP is being shown for the first time at the LA auto show in a couple weeks
and is susposed to be the direct injection turbo
and from what i know the 2.0 s/c motor was to be short lived from day 1 , all theough they should have just used the complete 2.0 turbo motor from the saab 93T high boost turbo

Forced Induction makes me smile... the boost hits, the tires break free, the car begins to pile on speed as the ******* speedometer needle heels over like its possessed... oh yes.
If you've never had a car with a turbo (and I'm not talking your mom's volvo), it's a blast.
I've had a couple...
If I keep this Cobalt, it's getting the turbo treatment!
