Obviously, logic dictates that the SS/SC has the best chance of becoming a valuable car sometime down the road. Performance orientated vehicles ALWAYS command more $$ over their less spirited siblings.

There are a few different sub-models, so that is a bit of a generic response. Now, if you were to pick a particular year with certain options, then I can see the possibility of this being true.
Either an SS/SC will be worth something down the road ... or it won't. Options will have little to do with it.

For instance, I own a 2007 Cobalt SS/SC with the G85 Performance Package WITH Recaros. I could see mine being a collectors item down the road because there are very limited numbers of 07's with the Recaros as well as the LSD.
Your options might only add a few $$ to the final equation - but that's it. There is no package available on our car like having an option for a larger engine. Those are what would have made a big difference in $$ (had there been any).

Otherwise, like I said ...

Either SS/SC's will be worth something - or they won't.

One question, is the SVT Focus or the SRT-4 a collectable? No. SS/SC is just another car.

Anything said in this post can pretty much be said about any car these days.

Here are a few rare option cars made in the last few years:
- C5 Corvette FRC (Fixed Roof Coupe)
- C6 Corvette Z51
- GTO with Sport Appearance Package
- Firebird Trans Am Firehawk
- Firebird Formula Firehawk
- 35th Anniversary Camaro SS
- Collectors Edition Trans Am
- Full SLP optioned Camaro SS

Then you also have your factory modified cars like Roush, Saleen, SLP and so on.

I had a car that was kind of a Oldsmobile fan collectors item, a 1992 Olds Achieva SCX W41. It was basically Oldsmobiles 1992 version of the SS/SC.

I don't know, has the 1984 Cadillac Cimeron held its value? or how about a V-6 Cavi?

The plain cold fact is that our beloved Cobalt is an ECONOMY car and I don't see it holding anything at all.

I can see it now 30 years into the future when someone finds my 1993 Cavalier Z24 in the trees.

" Holy **** this is a super rare 1993 Cavalier Z24 3.1 V6 with air induction hood and a three speed automatic "

" Yep they don't make em like this anymore "

Only the ones who bought the LS or LT that wanted the SS/SC Seriously tho, not that many. Its not like its the hottest car on the road right now. Not trying to sound dickish I'm just saying our Cobalts value is much like the final hours of the Titanic.

I don't think the Cobalt will ever become a collectable car, but I wouldn't be suprised if it becomes a 'sought after' car in the future.
By 'sought after', I mean project car style. Kind of like the status that DSM's, CRX's, Miata's, etc have. Then again, SRT-4's will also be in this cartegory too.

I think the SS/SC will be sought after in a few years... its like the SRT 4's they get rarer to see and more and more nicely done up project rides....

Do I ever think that the Cobalt it self will be a collector ride... No... sorry but I don't see 20+ years down the line someone seeing a cobalt on the road and prompting the same reaction as one would see if say a 1960's mustang rolled up...

Which is low.

I made a post about rare and collectible cars a few months back in the lounge and my conclusion along with that of many other people was that few people here understand what rare means. The cobalt even the SS/SC is in no way shape or form rare. Look at the production numbers, they are in the thousands. Rare cars are in the hundreds if not less. There are few rare cars produced today under 200k dollars, even sure fire collectibles like the Ferrari 430 are not rare with production numbers well over 1000 and it's highly debatable if it will hold it's value considering other recent V8 Ferraris haven't done so well with much smaller production runs. Granted comparing a Ferrari to a Cobalt is apples to oranges in a since but the theory holds up.

Another thing that has changed is the idea of a collector car. Back in the 60s and 70s when the muscle cars were made few held on to them and kept them low milage therefor through the attrition of time the numbers got significantly less and the cars became less and less available. Back then a very extreme few bought cars as collectibles, now it's all the rage. There are a couple dozen "collector cars" in my lowly little small midwestern town 40 years ago there woudln't have been any for 100 miles.

What has also changed is that we now have 16 year old kids with these cars thinking they are collectible which just didn't happen 30 years ago.

The fact is the Cobalt will never be a six figure collector car, it has everything against it and nothing really in it's favor to become a collector car.

Nope, someone posted a breakdown of the SS/SC by color here. Every color is in the 1000s.
