Did you replace your ignition before this big recall?

only one key on my key chain. never had issues with my 09 SS, though the first owner took it in for ignition issue... Don't put a bunch of keys on the key ring and you should be fine.
When I was younger I used to turn the car off when coasting down a long steep hill from Flagstaff to Phoenix to learn how to drive the car without power steering. kinda dangerous in hind sight but I learned what to do if I experienced an issue.

The problem is, no one knows how to handle a car without it this day in age.
I lost power steering in my 98' Cavy a few times.... I was able to still control the car w/o issue.

True, I guess I don't understand how people didn't simply apply the brakes and pull off to the side of the road or just pop it in neutral and restart it. Unless they freaked out and pulled a Carrie Underwood and let Jesus take the wheel

What most likely happened was the dealer replaced your switch with a non-recalled unit.
They are revising that one (or have revised already) and making parts that will be available once they send the second letter.
-Paraphrased from GM themselves.

Yes, that is what I was commenting on, it says in the NBC news article that the 2008+ model years use a 8mm detent pin which prevents this issue, that is likely what his was replaced with and why he doesnt have a problem with his key. Is it the same part # as the recall replacement? Probably not, but it doesnt mean he is in danger like we are though.

Most of our parents and grandparents grew up with cars with no power steering or brakes. They got around just fine.
The media is blowing this up, just like they blew up the power steering recall a few years back.

We arent in danger.... you can still steer and stop the car. Will it be harder to do so? Yes, but it can be done.

I'm not saying you cant steer and stop the car, in alot of these cases where people get killed from faulty equipment its because they panic. While my mom might have grown up driving a Plymouth duster with no power steering in her early 20s, im thoroughly convinced that if her cobalt were suddenly turn off on the highway she would panic and wind up in a car accident. It has happened to her before in the mid 90s in a 93 cavalier when the ignition control module died at 65mph and she had a panic attack while driving, luckily i was able to help her steer the car into the shoulder. So again, its not that your car is going to explode, its what people do behind the wheel. Ive had my car die while driving before, i can attest to that sudden tense moment where you are trying to figure out what just happened, but like you said I was able to control the car just fine.

Hard to tell if her tires are in good shape or not.
I'm skeptical as to rather this issue caused this accident.

I'm sure an airplane black box has a high tech name that only plane people use.
