Does the A/C suck in our cars or is just me?

they use it to pull the humidity out of the air more then anything else on those settings tho.

R12 is a more efficient gas vs R134a. Therefore some mechanical changes were down to the system to make the R134a as efficient. Condenser coils got larger, pressure valves were added, higher pressure is used etc etc.
While cruising its very had to tell the difference between a car with R12 or R134a.
But due to the design of the system when you stop the larger condenser becomes inefficient and the delta t will drop.
Do this little experiment. Idle your car on a really hot day. Turn the A/C to pull in outside air. Stick a thermometer in a vent and wait for it to stabilize. Then take a garden hose and spray the condenser coil on the front of the car and watch as the temp coming out of the vents drop like a rock.
You dont even need to use a thermometer you'll easily feel a difference.
R12 wasnt effected as much by this. Increasing the pressure didnt effect the temperature on such a wide scale nor did it have quite as big of a condenser to absorb the outside heat at idle.
A properly maintained R134a system will still freeze the evaporator and require a low pressure or low temp cycling. And you cant get it any colder if the evaporator is freezing no matter what kind of refrigerant youre using.

I dont get why ppl are saying that it doesnt get that cold, when I had my balt, the AC would get so cold that condensation would for above my vents on my dash.

Mine works fine, it is great having the remote start on those 115* days. I am still trying to figure out why you need A/C in PA, everytime I visited my grandparents there in the summer is was cool enough not to need it. I never saw it get above 95*.

I think a lot of it depends on the motor. The one in the Cobalt is ok and actually better than the one in my Blazer which has a 4.3. But the A/C in my dad's Duramax works too good.

It has been hot as hell around here the past few days. I turned my air on in my Balt for the 1st time this season and at the 2 setting I was getting the chills!! Mine works fine!!!

use the normal a/c mode to allow the a/c to run a bit and start cooling a bit of the inside air. Once it isn't as hot in the car anymore use the recirculate and it will just keep getting colder and colder. To cool off the air inside the car faster drive for about a mile with the normal a/c mode on and the windows cracked.
I had to do this today..the first time in a long while that I had to use the AC. My mom always wants it one, even when its cool out side. It was hot, hot, hot, in the Cobalt after I got out from work. The car was sitting in direct sunlight for about 7 hours, there is no shade in the damn parking lot. And since my car is black, its even worse. I swear, when I opened the door...it felt like I was getting into an oven. I turned on the AC full blast for a couple minutes, then I hit the recirculate to cool it down more. Thank God that it just rained and dropped the temp. about 18*..was in the low 90's, now in the mid 70's..

I put mine on recirculate but leave the air conditioning button off. It gets pretty cold doing that.
How does the air recirc. work in our cars? Am I saving gas by just using the recirc instead of air conditioning too?

no problems here in my '06. drove from ri to mass today (hour drive), 100 in parts, had the ac on the whole time. nice and cold. i always hit recirculate with just the dash vents, obviouslly all windows closed (i don't get why you'd open the windows with the ac on anyways...). typcailly left the fan on 2, only put it on 3 just after getting in the car when all the windows were shut and once the air cooled down.

i believe what basically happens is the car doesn't take outside air in, like vents are closed off to the outside, so the fans blowing air now just blow the air in the car around. this allows the temperature to be more 'controlled' so to speak. if you're trying to cool the car, the air inside will obviously be cooler than the air outside. bringing in warmer outside air will warm the cabin. close off the vents bringing in the outside air, you don't have that issie.
and i don't think fan speed affects gas milage, only when the ac is actually on.

I live about as far south as you can get. Twenty miles to the beach for me half way between Houston and Corpus Christi, Texas. Mine works fine and we have 90 to 100 percent humidity with 100 degree weather damn near all year long.

My last three vehicles were Ford Rangers and the A/C systems in those trucks are the same units found in the Explorers only the Ranger has 1/3 the size passenger compartment. You have to be careful while driving with the A/C set on max because you could wreck your car while dodging the ice cubes it throws at you... LOL It is a big difference moving to the Cobalt with its smaller engine, smaller A/C compressor & blower all with a larger passenger area to cool down but I would say it is just average when compared to other cars...

I have no problems with the AC in my car or my wifes car. Both work totally fine. In fact, I've felt down right chilly running them cranked up and often have to turn them down.
Cracking the windows or sunroof a bit when you first turn on the AC is actually a good thing, since it lets the hot air out. Will drop the temp a lot faster.
