Exclamation Don't change your own oil? Check this out...

So, I've got 22 500 km on my 2007 Cobalt now, bought it at 20 000. Changed the oil in it yesterday, check out what I found when I took out my oil filter...

I'm just going to safely assume that this filter has never been changed - it's probably factory installed. The Edmonton Lube-X sticker that was on my windshield when I bought the car read that the oil was replaced in January 2008. Something seems fishy to me.

So there's a little warning to everyone who doesn't change their oil themselves - they may not be replacing the filter. Sure, it's pain in the ass to pull out if it's under the supercharger, but mine isn't supercharged. It's called laziness. Throttle response is at least 40% faster than before I changed the oil, and I don't hear the engine knock for a couple seconds when I start the engine with a brand new FRAM filter.

All Canadian Tire had in stock was a FRAM. I wasn't about to drive further to get a filter, especially with gas prices and the cost of the damn thing.

Well i doubt its the factory oil filter cause the picture you posted isn't an AcDelco filter so that should make you feel alittle better. Here is a post i made with pic's of a GM filter and a Fram. I agree thou , that filter looks like ****.
Oh the used filter in this thread had 5K miles on it and its the fram.

it is a pain in the ass to change oil but i do like the drop from the top oil filter much cleaner, and if you pull off that sensor to get at filter make sure you put it on b4 turning your key or check engine light will come on until cleared, found that out the hard way

My filter looked exactly like that first time I changed my oil. I got the car when it had 28k miles on it and changed it at 30k.

Oh good. I still feel sorry for that poor car. I should call up that Lube-X in Edmonton and give them **** for not replacing my filter.

That must only be on other models... I didn't have a sensor anywhere that i had to remove. It's just right there below and to the right of my intake when I take off that ugly plastic cover.

I wonder if the oil jockeys at these places even know where the damn filter is on the Cobalt.

Just do your own oil change if you have the tools for it.Its a easier access now to get to a oil filter on the cobalt.

I work at a place where there's a hoist I can use so I did my change there. They have a pneumatic tire changer and (soon) a tire balancer. It's great. I'll be sticking to doing them myself, this car is my baby!

That sucks man. I used to do mine but got tired of it so I take it to the dealer and have them do it. For the same price as me doing it myself they change it all and fill everything else up too, and I can watch them do it right there.

i don't get why people on a car enthusiast site can't change their own oil. that would avoid all these problems we hear about.

I try 50/50 its just time, time is rare and valuable and if I'm spending the little I have changing oil I can't be modding in that time. So I try to do every other oil change. For me its just lack of free time that I would rather spend putting in go fast parts.

That sucks but it's funny...maybe they did change the filter they just wanged the hell out of it on the way in. There's no way to put the filter in the cap and get it back in to my knowledge, you have to put the filter in first then the cap...at least that's how I do it.

I might do that for my next change. My folks know the owner of one of the lube places in town so we'll deal with them. They'll check everything in fifteen minutes and give me a handy little checklist as to what they did, what might need to be done soon, and what is good for a couple thousand kilometers. A peace of mind thing since the only thing I've done is try to do the airbox mod and take off my intake resonator off. Turned out the only bolt was stripped from factory!

... so as much as I think I can do everything on my car I know I can't. :P Good to have a second opinion

I attached the filter to the cap and then screwed the cap in. Seems to be working...
