exhaust no cat, mandrel bending? any advice
#2
im getting mine done this weekend. 3" mandrel bent w/o cat, magnaflow muffler and a resonator. Out of all the mufflers i've heard on the cobalts magnaflow sounds the best IMO

I'm getting the bending and the flange done by my buddys uncle, he owns and shop and from what i've seen is very good at what he does. All i gotta do is buy the muffler and resonator and hes gonna do it for around 300 bucks

Your buddy is ripping you off. I manage a collision center and had the exhaust shop that I use build me a 2.5 in cat-back exhaust system using a Magnaflow muffler and installed my ssperformance downpipe for $320.
3 in is way too big though. Even though your pushing 300 hp, on a 4cylinder 3 in is not worth it. You are losing so much back pressure that you are hurting yourself. Especially if you are not going to put a cat on it. Then you are really f-ing yourself. Everyone focuses too much on horsepower and not enough on torque. Horsepower is how fast you can go. Torque is how fast you can get there. What good does it do to have a high top speed, but it takes forever to get there.
Let me put it to you this way. A 2 in exhaust system on a 300 hp 4cylinder is like trying to drink a 64 ounce soda with one of those ungodly thin mixing straws. You can get fluid through the straw really fast, but only in small amounts. A 3in exhaust system on a 300 hp 4 cylinder is like trying to drinka 64 ounce soda using a garden hose. You can potentially drink a large volume of liquid through it, but it would be almost impossible to creat aenough suction. A 2.5 in exhaust on a 300 hp 4cylinder is like using a reqular straw on that same drink. Works perfect.
By the way, I love how the Magnaflow sounds on mine. Beautiful deep tone.

not think, you ARE... 2.5" is fine for a whiles to go... i haven't seen anyone on this site put down enough power yet to truly take full advantage of a 3" exhaust
those mods gave you over 300 to the wheels? is that an estimate or you have a dyno chart?
i have a little over 300 to the wheels, and im still not done modding. so not going 3" would be stupid for me to do.

I am getting a little tired of all these exhaust piping size thories lately. Will someone please find hard dyno evidence on a small displacement SUPERCHARGED engine, or else let it die. All of us are building daily drivers. 3-4 hp or torque, one way or another, is NOT going to make a difference. Anybody going for big hp numbers will go 3in because they are planning to bump up the power. everyone else, the power is not going to make a real-life difference.
