F40 trans

I have a 2006 Chevy cobalt 2.0 supercharged 5 speed manual and I was wondering if the f40 trans will fit my car been seeing a lot of different reviews on different form sites and just wanted to see if it’s worth the money or not I would greatly appreciate if someone would give me some insight on this

It fits, but requires some special parts (mounts, etc).

Why do you want to move to the F40? There are other options, as well, but a good fit depends on what you want from the car and why you want to do the swap.

Synchro's can be changed - 5th gear work doesn't require you to split the case. It could potentially even be done without pulling the transmission out of the car, but I haven't done it, so can't actually comment with a definite answer. There were a couple threads last year about people swapping out 5th gear (stripped teeth). I know user NickD was one of them.

To answer your question though: F23, F35, and the F40.

F35 is obviously the easiest swap, but they're getting rare and hard to find, and the prices are steadily going up.

F40 swap is very expensive and many of the parts are custom made by specific vendors. The transmission itself is also a good 25-30 lbs heavier than the F23/F35, and is similarly rare and expensive.

F23 is pretty easy if you can do the work yourself, they're way more plentiful and inexpensive, meaning the entire swap can even be done cheaper than buying a new/different F35, if you're resourceful. I'm doing this to my car right now - transmission and all required parts - I think I'm around $7-800 for the entire swap - but I went with new OTTP mounts and NAPA axles, and bought a specific F23 (XFE). I could have done it for under $300 if I had just used all junk yard parts.

Thanks for replying I was looking at zzp’s website and it said there f40 conversation is available without the regal trans but I think I found the trans on eBay for 700$ but I’m not 100% sure it’s the same one and they also said something about a new Speed senor that has to go on this new trans which I’m not sure if they come with the kit or not. And also went to a few transmission shops asking if they could rebuild my f35 that’s already in my car and they said 5000 for parts and labor and that doesn’t include them putting it in

New speed sensors can be cheap enough off of NAPA or something like that. Again... you're looking at buying a $700 transmission + a $2700 transmission install kit to move to the F40. A BRAND NEW F35 is cheaper than that... and a swap to the F23 is cheaper than that. I honestly don't get the allure of the 6-speed swap. It's heavier and the gearing truly sucks - first gear is actually shorter. A lower interstate cruising RPM (only with the Regal F40) isn't worth that amount of money. I made a Transmission Spreadsheet that details out the RPM vs Speed relationship of all available Ecotec transmissions worth taking a look: https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/tech...dsheet-329296/

Zero mile F35's: https://store.dfkitcar.com/products/...5-transmission

And I can just about guarantee you that a random transmission shop knows next to nothing about an F35 (as I said earlier, they're rather rare), so a quote of $5000 for parts and labor is just their bullshit way of saying "we don't want to do the work". If you can't do the work yourself and/or don't know someone with experience with a Saab F35... then just replace the transmission itself.

I am sold on switching my 09 Cobalt with the f23 but I have found no guide on what parts to get to complete the swap, my build will make arround 420whp, do I need to modify my f23 to support this power?

Swapping an LNF is a bit different than swapping an LSJ (what I have) do to the difference in wheel bearing spline count. It's been done, but I don't know the specifics for your application. Another user on this forum with an HHR SS did the conversion, as well. You should look up his thread.

Otherwise, basically everything about the swap is the same.

You'll need an F23. F23 front transmission mount. F23 upper transmission mount. F23 shifter cables. F23 shifter box. HPTuners to correct your speedometer (VSS count changes). Axles (LSJ's can use F23 Cobalt/G5/Ion/HHR axles - I don't know about LNF's). I think that's it. I used the F23 TOB and swapped to a SS Braided clutch line from my master to TOB. Some people use the F35 TOB and then either bend the clutch pipe to work or make a custom one (not too terribly hard).
