Yes, the execs worked hard for the diploma on the wall. But they still work for GM, if a company takes a cut where the workers lose money they should too. After all they still work for GM. It does not matter if you mop the floors in the bathroom to the exec officers, they are all employs.

Yeah execs had to go to college, attend frat parties, find the chemist, power drink to earn a piece of paper. That paper does not mean they actually can apply or understand what the books have taught them, nor the right because of a piece of paper to earn the amounts they do.
Some of the most powerful business leaders of today and yesterday DO NOT HAVE A PIECE OF PAPER.
SCREW THE UAW and pass me another roll of MBA toilet paper!!!

from what I gathered, this was more or less a 'show' strike, something to twist GM's arm into picking up their feet in the negotiations. I'm union myself, USW Local 5 at a paper mill, and unions are good and bad in many respects. In our case, it's better we have it than we don't.
What worries me is that GM won't commit to the job security... Where I work, we are constantly under the gun of overseas cheapness.
Someone had made the comment 'uneducated factory worker'. That broad over generalization seemed a bit unfair. Just because you're putting wheels on a Chevy Malibu doesn't mean you were a grinning, drooling freak that had no other place to work.
Anyways, interesting to see what happens in the next couple of days.

I see both sides of this ordeal, as a Transportation Dispatcher for a company that hauls some GM freight I would like to see GM keep there plants in the US and guarantee the new model contracts to those plants.
1.) It keeps our US commercial drivers employed
2.) If the plants go to Mexico that will bring MORE Mexican trucks to US highways, and let me tell you that is NOT a good thing for anyone that shares the road with trucks.
3.) The US Commercial Driving industry is a joke already, if GM pulls its contracts and goes to Mexico this will only further the downward turn of an already beaten industry and further lower the crappy wages that commercial drivers make.
Also living in Dayton, our job market will be DIRECTLY impacted if GM does not keep the plants open. Within 15miles of Dayton there are 3 GM Delphi Plants, 1 GM assembly plant(GM Moraine), and 2 MAJOR storage facilities, this could easily flood the job market with well over 4000 unemployed people if GM was to close those plants.
But as some have stated GM is a business and the bottom line is, they want to do what it takes to cut costs and make a larger profit, even if that means going to Mexico & Canada.

GM can open up plants in the US without using the UAW. The import companies have done it. Just because GM might not use the UAW does not mean they wont use US labor. If GM does move all of thier plants outside of the US there there is a good chance my next car wont be a GM car.
Why exactly are they striking? I know they are negotiating new terms but did GM say something to rub the UAW's the wrong way? I think they are only striking to show GM that they can. In todays economy I see nothing positive from unions. Some of the worst companies in the world have unions...
The thing about strikes is that they affect more than the company that is on strike. There are companies, like the one that I work for, that is affected by the strike. We have had to stop production for the products that we sell to them. I am all for making more money, but sometimes it seems selfish when you affect more than your own company.

Big Problem with it all is, There is No Pride in Made In America anymore! Unions, Owners & all involved dont give a **** what they are making >>... Just How much they are making off of it!
Piece of the Pie here & a Piece here, Sooner or later the Pie has to get bigger or there isn't enought to go around & we all Pay for it! Just My 2 cents

I feel bad for the Canadian workers, they had to close down from lack of parts from the US. Small businesses that sell GM parts are going to lay people off as well. Bad for the economy as a whole Even the Canadian and eventually Mexican one.
Poor Canada guys...

I have to ask this, maybe a poll would be better... How many of you work in manufacturing/industry and are members of a union?

i know we're keeping this civil so this is the nicest way i know how to say this. unions can kiss my ass. i am just glad that gm and the uaw reached an agreement. the best thing for everyone in this situation is for the union to help cover health care for its employess/reitrees so that GM can AFFORD TO USE AMERICAN WORKERS. it is time for a union to actually DO SOMETHING to help the people that join it instead of bitching at everyone else to do something and waiving their strike sword around. i want manufacturing of GM products to stay in the U.S...thats why i buy GM products. if i wanted something built in korea i would buy a godamn kia. its just unfortunate that organizations like the uaw make it so hard and unreasonable to use american workers. they say their goal is to keep more jobs in the U.S. but then they go take action that reminds GM why they dont want to use american workers. there, i got it off my chest. go ahead and get pissed if you want, i wont be responding to this thread again.

IMTMFL Beotches!
And not to start another flame war. I'm glad that the strike is over and everything is settling down. I'm just hope this strike isn't the stray that makes the GM Camel decide to move its future cars to plants outside the US.
