Hey guys,

As long as I've had my Cobalt LS, whenever I get on the brakes with a decent amount of pressure, the volume of the radio/music turns down, and then after a few seconds it goes back up. I never thought about posting it until today when a lady slammed on her brakes just a few feet from the intersection to stop at an orange light (in which a decent amount of cars could have made through), accordingly when I hit my brakes, the volume turned very low, almost drowned out by the AC... Normally my car does this, but I never experienced it to this degree before. I took it to a parking lot to test it out: I would speed up, then hit the brakes at varying amounts of pressure-- the harder I hit the brakes, the lower the volume dropped. (People were probably looking at me kinda weird )

Anyone else having this happen in their Cobalt (LS or otherwise?)

P.S.- Anyone wanna donate to the 'Help Wash Cirrus's Cobalt Fund' ? I have $3 in my wallet, along with some loose change, and my car is fairly dirty and hasn't been washed or waxed for about two weeks now...

(A.k.a- too lazy to go out to the bank to take some money out or wait for the paycheck tommorow.. )

This is a feature offered by GM. On your radio there isa button that says "Auto Volume" or something like that. Press it and you can turn off the feature.

It's purpose is to drown out engine noise when you accelerate and let you hear the traffic when you stop at an intersection.

Aaah cool, gunna go turn that off now... why the hell would anyone want that on? (Gets ready to be flamed with 1000's of reasons)

I guess some people are just too lazy to use their own dial or move a finger to the button on the wheel lol.

This used to be called SCV (Speed Compensated Volume) on older Delco systems and there was an outer ring on the volume control knob that you could adjust for sensitivity.

well I think the main reason it does it, is if you fall asleep and gas it, you'll hopefully wake up before anything serious would happen.

Orange, as in the light was just switching between yellow and red......... That would be my guess.

I always have the auto volume control on........ it works well for me.

the whole purpose of the auto volume is for the car to automatically adjust the volume of your stereo so the sound is not muffled by the wind noise and stuff when you go faster...(the faster you go the louder it gets) ...baically a lazy mans option ...next time you accelerate really try to listen to the radio turn its volume up...its not a whole lot, but its noticable

You can notice it change when getting on and off highways as well.

Auto volume compensation is a nice feature. It keeps you from having to turn the volume and up and down when getting on and off the highway, going through town, and whatever other situation it comes up in.

Here in NJ.. often times on the highway you can go 55mph then hit some traffic stop to 0.. or slow like 15-20.. then go back to your 55-65.. repeat. It really comes in handy. Keeps the 'loudness' constant.

its so if you're driving at high speeds, the volume will be compensated for the road/wind noise, so it seems that its still at the same volume.. i happen to like the feature.. also, if ya wanna get your volume a little higher, go 60 and turn the auto volume on high, and the regular volume all the way up

yeah my 99 cavi Z24 came with that feature....i love it. i wish all cars had it. gets crankin pretty good at 80

i never really noticed it go down when i stop, but i do hear it when i get on it. At first i didnt really notice it, then my g/f pointed it out i think its a niffty little feature. Havent any of you see the commercial for the new '07 eclipse, its an entire commercial advertising this feature.

Me too. I actually like having it there. In fact I'm so used to it now I forget it's doing it. Used to suck having to turn the stereo up, down, up, down, up down. :P

I do think that's kind of funny...they're advertising something that GM's been offering in their base model vehicles for upwards of 10 years now.

i have mine off, i have the radio on a decent volume 1/3 or so, and i never adjust it as i speed up, if i have windows down, i use the knob to adjust

yeah lol but as long as i am here, I use the low option when my windows are up medium when my sun roof is open or loud when my windows are open. It isn't the lazy mans way to turn up the radio. The point is to enjoy your music while paying attention to the road so your hands are not busy fussing with controls. Those with aftermarket speakers or subs will want the option off

My windshield wipers do it too. Was out and about in the rain today and noticed that for the first time. When I got above 40 or so the windshield wipers automatically sped up and then slowed back down to intermittent when I slowed down.
