learning how to shift better
I have had my ss/sc for 2 weeks now and i have gotten a little better at shifting but i have some questions. On my 1-2 shifts when i stay on the gas and power shift the clutch just slips like no other..but when i let off on the gas and shift to 2nd and stomp on the gas it boggs a lot...how can i learn to shift it better? what am i doing wrong? by the way this is from a stop and i shift 1-2 at about 6k rmp's

Better take it easy on the clutch, cuz I'm seeing a clutch replacement in your future.
Are you positive the clutch is slipping or are the tires spinning? Even when my car was stock if I shifted first to second then romped the gas all I would do is leave two 100 foot black marks.
The clutches in the SS/SC don't like to be rode. You need to make nice quick releases on the clutch when shifting gears and just learn to rev match and you will be fine.

another question then....
When i am at school the parking lot is a mess after school is let out and its bumper to bumper traffic. Is it bad if i have the clutch 1/2 out and giving it gas so i just inch forward?

Believe it or not, my Cobalt SS/SC was actually my first manny tranny car. I had uber problems shifting because I sucked at doing so, then I learned that its better to shift depending on your speed, its easier on the clutch and on the pockets. But if you're a stomper, remember that your should let the clutch off easy at 1-2. If you just release the clutch fast and you are at low RPMs, say 3500 or 4000, your Cobalt is most likely going to bog because you didn't give it enough power for the right speed. I'm doing excellent now. I'm still learning so if anyone has any suggestions, im willing to soak up wisdom.

This is actually my first manual car and I have found a very very easy way to shift. Shift at 2k rpm's in every gear. It saves you gas mileage and is very simple. From first gear, when you hit 2k rpms, take your foot off the gas, press the clutch in fully and then put it in second, release the clutch fully, then press the gas again. Repeat with all gears until you are in 5th gear. This will save your clutch, save your gas mileage, and its a lot easier on the car then slamming through the gears at 7k rpms.
Everyone has fun with there car sure, but if you want to just drive conservatively and chill, 2k rpm shifts are just fine.

Damn u guys shift at 6k or above in first gear. I shift between 3 and 3.5. and my car does fine. As stated above it saves gas. 2k seems a little bit low though. I don't want to bog my car. But if it's working then HELL YES!!!

I have never onced bogged the car shifting at 2k on a level road, if its up a hell at a slower speed and i need to shift at 2500 or 3k i will, but generally you can just feel it. I dont like reaching full boost when im just cruising because it eats away the gas.

If you've only driven a stick for 2 weeks, DONT POWER SHIFT quite yet. You could really do damage to the clutch, and this car doesnt like to be powershifted. If it is slipping you are probably shifting too early, but dont get ahead of yourself or youll regret it. Also, you can let it out half way for a second or two no problem, wont hurt anything. You'll smell it if you burn the clutch, it smells like the brakes on 18 wheelers.

Anyone slamming through the gears 7k I doubt is concerned about gas economy... they would probably be TRYING to accelerate quickly.
As far as letting the clutch half out and giving it some gas to inch forward... you can do that but it can be rough on the clutch. Typically in rush hour I let the cars start moving and get a bit ahead of me so I can fully disengage the clutch when I start moving. The trick is getting good at letting the clutch out so you don't leave too big of a gap and people cut in and you don't want to let it out and fly into the person in front of you... lol

if you're driving hard in first, and your tires are spinning, your guage is reading higher than you are actually going. example, your speedo says you're doing 35 but you're really only doing 25. (wheels spinning makes you and your guage think you're going faster than you are) so when you shift to 2nd, you're putting the car out of it's powerband for hard acceleration.
also, you hit the nail on the head by saying you have to wait till the clutch is all the way out on the 1-2 shift.
if you have the clutch half in and are moving, your are burning your clutch which = no good. the only time you want to be on the clutch is when you're shifting, and starting from a stop, and you don't want ot be on the clutch long. from a stop, i'm off the clutch at 1,000 rpms.

let it out half way get it moving an disengage it if your not comfortable with the gapping technique....jus don't rev the crap outta it or you'll be burning the clutch...the s/c's may not like to be slipped but wat car does...these dog on the line so bad or u spin so you have to slip a lil off the line in order to get a good launch...but it isnt necessarily just you the cobalt s/c's are trickier to drive than your typical manual...so dun feel so bad

That's funny, I have 43,000 miles on my stock clutch - running stage 2 with the stage 3 pulley and my clutch still grabs as hard as it did the day I bought it.

On topic - I shift at 3k+ all the time. Isn't my first manual vehicle, but you have to relearn a little on different cars. I'm pretty good, and even I **** up sometimes and smoke the clutch a little. No biggie, just don't do it constantly.
31k miles, stock clutch, no slippage.

my cobalt is my first manual too. but i've got the hang of it now. with rare mistakes now and then. but I always shift at 2500rpm. that's what my stock shift light tells me what 2 shift at anyway. I also find that if you move the stick too fast like sorta bypassing "neutral" you'll hear a crunch like sound. atleast on mine. I'm not sure if that's the synchro but I'm sure its not good. don't slam the gears or do it fast its all about smooth fluid motion. in real racing they don't slam the gears or shift it very fast. cause your not giving the synchro enough time to synch. so with each gear, shift to n, then the next gear all in 1 fluid motion but not slow! just a fluid motion. instead of jumping from like 3rd to 4th without even like touching n. cause that's when I hear the crunch sound if I do that. I don't like launching with a very low rpm, cause it sounds like the car is gonna die and vibrates badly and doesn't sound too good. so I usually rev around 1500-2000 for first gear.
