Just for the record, be careful using locking gas caps during the winter. Not sure if this is going to be a problem, but the ones I put on my Cavaliers always froze up. Also, if they want into your gas tank, you can yank the gas caps off if you pull hard enough. That was how I got the last one off the 98 Cavalier when it froze up. So, just some experiences from my endless well of stories.
Just for the record, I caught one of the ATV kids around the block in my backyard tonite at about 1:30 with a rubber hose and a gas can. The dog started growling and i could hear someone trip over my nephews swingset in the backyard where I park my car. So I snuck around the house with Copper and my 12-gauge. It was empty, of course and I didn't point it at him. He just about **** his pants when I stepped out of my cellarway with it and my dog, though.
Told to take a hike or my dog was going to eat him.
I do a really good Dirty Harry impersonation!

I'll stick with my stock cap, if someone wants your gas they will take it. If they see a locked gas cap they'll either laugh, or get mad and key your car.
However, god save whoever I catch stealing my gas.

reasons i will not buy a locking gas cap:
1. added expense
2. easy to get off with out key, i have done it several times
3. Some will cause SES lamp to illuminate
4. Most newer vehicles have a (ping pong looking) ball in filler neck, it is there in case of roll over so fuel wont spill, but it also makes it where you cant siphon
5. The word is that now the theives are just drilling holes in bottom of tank and drianing all the fuel out. Very simple since most newer vehicles also have plastic fuel tanks.

When we were kids (i.e. in school and unemployed!), we had many ways to get fuel together to cruise in one jalopy or another. One method was risky, but ridiculously arrogant (in other words ballsy). The police station in my town had the key to the police station on a rafter on the station porch. Our cops are not on all the time and usually are done by 1am anyways. The responsibility goes to the state police. I happened to notice the key one night, so i got credit for the idea, even though I found out after the fact that everyone knew about it! Inside the door to the police station were the keys to everything municipal... including the town gas pumps. An enterprising individual would take the keys, unlock the gas pump (simple Master lock), his accomplice pumps the fuel while the first guy puts the keys back. There had to be at least 10 people in on this caper! Just for the hell of it one, we counted at least 5 people doing this all through the night! Some of them were respected 'pillars of the community'...
Second method was less risky, but more of a pain in the ass. The village parked their garbage truck at the sewer plant next to the town beach. The chain link fence where sewer plant met beach had been trashed thanks to a sliding plow truck. So, over the fence with gas can and rubber hose and BAM, hit the garbage truck (it was an 80 Chevy chassis with a 366 4bbl gas engine)... it had a 40 gallon or so tank... i remember one night one of the guys hitting the truck and filling up his old beater Escort, a Chevy Celebrity and topping off a Cavalier! He still had two 5 gallon cans full!
Keep in mind, I don't condone this now that I am an adult, but as a teenager, we thought we were so badass. It's funny how 20 years changes your perception.
I have to agree with stlurbanpunk... we may all have to take up the syphoning hobby if things continue on like this.
