Question Locking gas cap from GM??

so with the gas prices soaring past $4 here in phoenix, az, many ppl have begun to steal gas from other peoples' gas tanks... its been all over the news, so its been recommended to buy a locking gas cap...

now my question is, does GM sell them for our cobalts?

sorry if this is a repost, the search > than me...

thanks for any input..

You can not siphon gas from newer cars, so the reports you were hearing were either in regards to older vehicles or the reports were BS

I think the new thing is just cutting the lines or punching a hole in the tank. I dont see much of a point of a locking gas cap.

the big thing is stealing from Uhauls or other big trucks
it's almost guaranteed that they have more gas than a small car like a cobalt

The tanks have a membrane around them. Im not sure what its made of, but pretty much its a flexible condom which ideally prevents gas spilling everywhere during and accident.

So punching a hole in the tank is a no go. Also the potential for a spark could be high.

I used a locking gas cap from AutoZone for about two months.

It NEVER worked properly. If you twisted it to the left without even much force, it'll pop right off.

Three days into using it, I started having problems getting it to lock properly. (note that even when locked properly, you could still pop it off to the left).

It began working progressively worse and worse until two months later, it just stopped working. It wouldn't lock. And because of its design, it wouldn't seal the gas tank at all.

I threw that piece of **** away.

and to everyone else's comments.... i didnt really pay attention to the types of cars that where gettin hit, but many ppl in the valley have been reporting it and yes, bigger trucks are one of the main targets cuz i remember reading it in a spanish newspaper.... its just with the price of gas goin higher and higher, i just cant afford to have my precious gas gettin jacked by some crackhead.... i was looking for a way to deter it, so thats why i made this thread...

so for those of you who have a lgc or a polished locking door (if even available), please post and let us know where u got it and how much it costed... thanks

I have a locking gas cap on my 87 Blazer, I don't have one on the Cobalt, and my 300ZX has 5 gallons of premium stashed in its tank, but the car has been sitting so long no one would ever think to look in it

I used to work at autozone...... the CST gas cap autozone sells doesn't fit at all........ so, I went to advanced auto parts, and whatever brand they ahd worked just fine.......... I inquired at the stealership, they don't make a locking as cap for the 'balt and they claimed that my aftermarket one was leaking (funny, with no code) so, I told them if they dont offer a locking cap, I was leaving........... so, I elft

I've had the same one on my car that I bought at Pep Boys 5 years ago. Not sure if GM makes one or not.

I bought one from Orielly's the week I got my car and its been great. The cap spins freely when its locked and I've never had a problem getting it off. Idk what brand it is, I'd have to look. I bought it to prevent people from stealing muh gas and to prevent people from putting **** in my tank (primary reason). I'd suggest getting one, people these days have no respect for other people's property.
