Looking to buy a Cobalt

Hey guys, like the title says, I'm thinking about buying a Cobalt. I need something that gets better gas mileage than what I have now, and I've always liked the Cobalts. So, typical noob questions here. What should I look out for, what goes wrong, what should I expect with a used cobalt?

It's going to be a DD, I'd like it to be a 2 door and a manual, and I'm not sure if I want the non-SS or the SS (or the difference between the three different SS versions to be honest). I'm leaning more towards an SS, but I don't know at this point. I'm trying to gather information about the cars, so any help would be great or pointing me in the right direction. Also, prices. They're all over the place on craigslist and whatnot. Price is going to depend on what I sell my Wrangler for, but I'd like to stay somewhere between 6k and 7k(is that reasonable?).

Thanks guys, I'm looking forward to learning more about these!

Lsj is supercharged, LNF is turbo and ss/na is the naturally aspirated ss

If you would consider yourself a car enthusiast I wouldn't get a N/A SS or a base model. You would be much happier with the Supercharged SS, or if you have a little more money, go for the Turbo SS.

That's what I'm starting to see...what do the prices range for on the sc version and the tc version? I know mileage is a factor in the price, but what's a high price for either?

Thanks!

you can pick up the supercharged ones for cheap. the turbo one killed the supercharged value for good reason. better handling. more speed and nicer interior.

Is it even worth getting ss/sc over a ss/tc? I mean, what's the general price difference?

If just for mileage and saving money but an ls 2.2, if you want power buy a ss/tc, I've owned my 2.2 ls and I had a 2.4 ss/na and buddy had a ss/sc. Favorite out of the 3 is the base ls. If I had to choose I'd but a ls or ss/tc bottom line

You can find a ss/sc for around 9-10k

If you want performance, the SS/SC's are a beast when turbo swapped.

What's the average mpg difference between the LS and the SS/TC? This, and price, would be the determining factor between the two I think.

I'd say average price for a SC is like 8g's, stock. Average price for TC around 12g's, stock.
MPG difference? Negligible. Gonna get around the same city driving, and the TC would probably have the upper hand in highway driving due to gearing.

I would avoid 05 or 06 cobalt 2.2's I've heard about several of those motors blowing up.

Awesome, thanks all. I'll start looking into them more. Very helpful posts! I'm leaning more towards the ss/tc, if I can find the right price

For a 5-7k price range, you're either looking at a Base Cobalt, SS/NA (2.4l) or a beat to hell SS/SC
