Subject: SES Light Due to a P0171 - Inspect Air Intake and Oil Dipstick - keywords leak vacuum #PIP3310E - (11/01/2005)

Models: 2005-2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

2006 Chevrolet HHR

2004-2006 Chevrolet Malibu

2005-2006 Pontiac Pursuit (Canada Only)

2005-2006 Saturn Ion

with 2.2L Engine (VIN D or VIN F - RPO L61)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:
On rare occasions, a SES light may be experienced due to a P0171 DTC. This DTC could be a result of an unseated oil dipstick or air intake snorkel, which can cause the engine to draw in air that is not metered by the MAF sensor, resulting in a P0171.

Recommendation/Instructions:
If the SI diagnostics do not isolate a cause for the P0171 DTC, ensure that the oil dipstick is fully seated in the dipstick tube and inspect the air intake snorkel clamps at the throttle body and air cleaner assembly to ensure that they are tight. If there is no problem found, note the LT fuel trim and remove the air intake snorkel for inspection of the throttle body and air cleaner seating area. If there is no problem found, install the air intake snorkel and evaluate the LT fuel trim again. If the LT fuel trim is reduced, the air intake snorkel may not have been fully seated at the throttle body and/or air cleaner assembly, causing the P0171.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
