Might have made a bad purchase... Help me out please??

Hey, I'm new to the forum so please don't give me a hard time... Okay, so the story is I recently bought a 2006 Cobalt SS/NA. I had been looking for a SS for months, so when I came across this one I felt I had to have it. So I bought it right away without looking too hard into its history. The guy I bought it from told me its never been in any accidents and that it had a clean title with no salvage history. He seemed trustworthy so mistakenly I believed everything he told me. Now, 2 months into ownership I'm finding more and more clues that it may have been in an accident or two... or three... I'd really like to run a carfax on it, but honestly I really don't want to spend money on something that's most likely only going to disappoint me. Being a teen driver making minimum wage, its hard enough just to pay for insurance on the SS. I'm not trying to be rude, but could anyone run a carfax for me? I'd really like to know what I have gotten myself into... The VIN is *****************.

Thanks in advance.

Because I had a few extra left over, +1 for humanity. This things been around the block a few time and you're the 9th owner, previous guy only had it 25 days. Actually, the past people all didn't keep it over a month themselves.

No offense but you should pay for your own carfax.

Ehhhh, scratch that. Owner 5 fucked up twice. Live and learn, $20-50 could have saved you a lot in the long run.

you would think "being a teen driver making minimum wage" you would do a little more research before you make a major purchase

Holy ****... This is not the news I was hoping for. I guess it is a live and learn situation, but this really sucks. Honestly, I did know that owner #8 had it for such a short period of time. He actually worked at a local dealership as a mechanic. He told me he bought it because his wife wanted an SS/TC, but he didn't want to spend money on a SS/TC just to find out she hated it. It's pretty clear now that that probably wasn't entirely true. The problem is I'm in too deep now. I've put too much money in it to sell it. It looks pretty good and get compliments all the time. Is there anyway I could see more of the carfax? I would really like to know more about how the car was cared for. And thanks a bunch for the information everyone. In an extremely strange sort of way it makes me feel a little better that I have information on it. Next time I'm definitely buying a carfax.

ssyellow ZachK, this might be a good way to learn how to wrench on cars.

I'm sure everyone has made poor purchases in the past, I know I have. Let me see if I can get more pictures later. If not, tomorrow, as I'm currently studying for a test.

Shout out to Jackie from GM Customer Service for also jumping in here to lend a hand also.

Accidents are not the be all end all of car's my friend. Properly repaired your car is just as good as it was new. Given the fact that this car probably had full coverage insurance for most of its life, it probably has been repaired several times at least. My car was involved in 3 moderate accidents over the course of its 5 prior owners, only one of which was reported to car fax because in PA they allow "title fowarding" which means the title doesn't have to get transferred from the original owners name until the title runs out of forwarding locations. It had been passed around between 2 owners and 3 dealers over the course of its lifetime since 06.

Despite its 3 accidents, the frame rail was straight as an arrow, and any damage that it had taken had either been repaired or was not significant enough to severely alter the car's drivablity. I just noticed the other day where the car had been hit in the rear for the first time while under there to spray some waxoyl undercoating as a rust preventative. The lower part of my trunk is crumpled up a decent amount, however not enough to effect the car at all.

Thing's that should scare you are airbag deployments, flood damage, reconstructed titles, salvage titles, and reported frame damage.

It has definitely been a learning experience. I am pretty mechanically inclined and have enjoyed doing all of the things I have done to it. It's been a fun project ever since I got it. Just wish those accidents could disappear, but it is what it is.

Something to keep in mind for your next purchase, even Car Fax wont show some accidents. For instance: They hit a tree and had it taken care of through a private shop without insurance, it might not show.

It actually just comes down to what you paid for it. If you got it for cheap, then you have nothing to worry about. If you splurged and paid a pretty penny for it then live and let learn.

Those both seem like incidences that could be easily repaired. I might be curious about the front suspension more than anything but that is about it. Good to see folks willing to help out. My only advice is definitely do more research because if your budget is so tight that the insurance is barely affordable, waiting a little longer to make that kind of purchase would be wise. Makes me glad I have been the only owner of mine (well second via title since it was under my parent's name first)

Take him to the local Magistrate. Might be able to get a rebate.
