Monte Carlo SS or Cobalt SS/SC
#27
I personally like the Monte. I have an emotional attachment to them though as an 87 SS was my first car 11 years ago. I was looking for a reasonably priced SS monte or Impalla 5.3L or a Grand Prix GXP w/ the 5.3. I couldn't find any cheap enough so I bought the Cobalt and it's ok I guess.

Thanks guys for the help, i love the balt but im leaning towards the monte just because its n/a and in the end i think i can get a much faster car, besides the sound of a v-8 is the best.

If you're hoping for a rear-wheel setup I wouldn't bother with the Monte. Its Front-Front, like the Balt. Nearly all Chevy cars are that way now. The new Camaro will be one of the first Front-Rear setups since the older Camaro, and Monte Carlo's.

[QUOTE=dover179;1230750]Might want to check your facts on that Z/28 comment. No powertrain options have been released yet. Also it has not been said if there will even be a Z/28. Most likely that engine will NOT go into the Camaro.
read it in the new automotive news magazine, it was a direct quote from bob lutz that the 5.3 would be the base v-8 and that it would be badged a z28, also confirmed the 260hp 3.6 hifeature as the v-6. he said their would be an ss, but didny state any thing about which motor
my quess is on the 6.2 that the vette getts for 09'
sorry for getting off topic, not trying to jack the thread

Lets see, chart is all wrong. Actual HP, the SS/SC would tie with the Impala SS. Stage 2 HP (hey, I bought mine brand new with Stage 2) would put the SS/SC in the lead by about .8lbs. Wow, that chart is so accurate! And I know that the LNF engine is slightly under rated (no where near as bad as the LSJ, about 5% instead of 20+%). So a LNF powered vehicles would move up slightly. etc etc.

The Monte isn't hopelessly slow. I know for a fact that the Grand Prix GXP will run 14.0 from the factory. Will the Cobalt do that? I don't think so. I/E/PCM and the car will run mid-13's all day long and get 28-30mpg on the highway. DOD is your friend!
My buddy just bought a Grand Prix GXP for about $26k out the door. Consider looking at the Pontiac with the 5.3. They are a little bit more sporty, have available NAV system and handle better due to the staggered wheels and stiffer suspension. They will also dyno a little higher in the torque range since the PCM is calibrated more for sporty driving than the Monte SS. Also the paddle shifters do, in fact, work.

For all of those arguing about how fast the monte is lets go for a race see who wins and then compare fuel mileage. As well 4-8 cylinder management is great and all but rather dependant on your driving. Not to mention all the added weight you are carrying around for such little horsepower. 300 hp in a v8 does not impress me, but if you are looking to tow something then its great for the torque.
I say Monte if you want a nicer overall vehicle and realize you won't have great fuel economy. Oh and probably a better resale value for the Monte.
Cobalt if you like quick car, good economy and an alright overall car.

try again sir.
i had a 05 gxp.
grand prix, fwd 5.3 car.
intake, dowpipe, 1.8 rockers, mufflers, N.O.S. wet kit. tune time ecm/tcm.
less than a grand invested. 13.21@108 on bald ass factory tires on a crappy track.
there are guys with similar mods, minus the bottle doing low 13's.
now, onto the motor. it has a huge potential. cam, heads, the world is limitless, untill you start doing bottom end work. the crank is specific to the ls4. which that is the same motor in all the fwd w body v8 cars now.
mine put down over 360 fwhp with said mods.
comfy ride, great brakes. decent handling for a tuna boat.
the transmissions suck ass. point blank.
it would be a hard toss up really between the SS and the css/sc car.
i did the plugs on my ls4 car more then one time. it's not that hard. neither is doing a rocker swap.

Go find a used GTO. Hell there are still some on the lots and dealers WILL be trying to get rid of them. If gas milage is not your #1 concern you cann't beat the performace per $ of the GTO.
