Shift Boot Replace

Shift Boot Replace
First off, I have searched and I've found some info on replacing shift boots on the Cobalt SS, but I want to confirm the process.
I'm seeing stuff about having to drill a hole in the shifter etc etc, is this correct??? I have a 2006 Cobalt SS/SC. Also I managed to buy a like new OEM shifter boot for 25 bucks shipped online, seemed like a great deal to me!
Thanks

New OEM boots are under $40 last time I checked.
You have to remove the knob, normally just pop the shift pattern trim off, there's a single screw under it, and the knob pulls straight up. It may be on there pretty good.
After that the shift boot just pops out and up over the shifter. Not hard at all if the knob comes out easy.

I didn't know that new OEM shift boots were that price, because from what I've read around online a shift boot in good condition was hard to find? I guess not though lol?
So there's no drilling involved, as stated some places online?
Thanks for your prompt reply!

The shift pattern plate that you have to pry up to expose the T25 screw to remove won't go back on. Looks like someone has had it off previously more than likely and broke the tab or something that held it on. I assume that I could/should just super glue the shift patter plate back onto the knob? Or does someone here have a better idea?
Thanks

The reverse lockout part should be installed facing the passenger side of the car... not the rear of the car like you have it in the photo. You need to rotate it or your reverse lock out will not work.

The way I have the white plastic piece in the picture is correct. You put the white plastic piece as I have it, and lock it onto the black plastic piece on the shifter boot and then install it onto the shifter rod, in case anyone needs to know in the future.

The reverse lock out is C shaped and fits in the black tab thats on the black base.
The C fits over the tab when you go into 5th.
The easiest way to figure it out is to go through shifting and see where 5th gear lands with and without the reverse lockout engaged.
Hold on let me photoshop the tab for you. As said above it appears the white part of the lockout needs to be rotated 90 degrees for the C portion to go over the black portion in my pic.

There's no way that I have the lockout on wrong. It only goes on two ways. It will not go onto the shaft any direction. If I change the way I have the reverse lockout now, then it won't engage into all of the gears due to the plastic piece being positioned wrong and not allowing it. For instance if I rotate where the plastic tab faces forwards it will not engage into first gear at all or not easily.
Not sure what's being said in this thread about arguing etc. but the truth is that this piece only installs two ways, both of which I have mentioned. The way I have it now, as shown in my picture, works fine. I appreciate all of the help from everyone.
Thanks!
