One of those was a VW wagon that was sold with 225,000 miles on it on the original clutch. We owned the car for 10 years. My father drove it before me and he downshifted too. Oh and in that 10 years my mom, who doesn't downshift because she doesn't know how to properly, replaced her brakes 7 times. We replaced the VW's brakes.... omg.... twice! Let's see... estimating a minimum of $50 per brake job (doing the work myself) my mom spent $350 on brakes and my dad and I spent $100. The '84 Quantum turbo diesel clutch is $185. So even if we replaced the clutch when we sold it we were at $285 and Mom was at $350.... Explain to me again how it is cheaper to replace the brakes?
Eh, do what you want, but a VW is NOT a GM vehicle, them things are build a helluva lot better. I blew apart my Getrag in my 04 sunfire, if you want I will try to search for my repair bill/warranty paper.

i vote do whichever floats your boat, i'll use downshifting or neutral whatever i happen to feel like atm, downshift correctly and it's not a big deal, atm my current Job is as Semi Driver, i mostly just use neutral in my car cause after you drive a semi for 12 hours straight RPM shifting i get this bad tendancy to forgot which vehicle i'm in mess up my downshifts :p hehe dont even get me started on double clutching.....

Holy ****, Vin Diesel posts here!?

Seriously though... I have always downshifted.. and I always will.
If you don't ride the clutch, that's all.

As for that whole "double clutching" bit.. anyone who beleives they need to double clutch should really watch F&F less....
All you need is good ol' Wikipedia... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_clutch

First off, i wouldn't take anything from wikipedia as the truth, its far from being reliable. 2ndly that whole line in fast and the furious was just them taking any words they could find and using them like they knew what they were talking about, like ricers like to do. double clutching is a good thing to do, never for drag racing, its a downshifting thing. Yes the principal does work in upshifting but its just not necessary.

and anyways, everyone knows thats not the problem, its all that nos, it will blow welds on your intake manifold

I forgot that you can put it in neutral without usin the clutch since i jus learned how to drive stick No i dont THINK its bad and you are wearin out your brakes but not your clutch. Its probly better to not downshift if u are gonna stop.

i would think having to start your engine back up would take more gas than say throwing it in neutral.

not when you can coast over a mile. the only place i do it is on the top of a very good sized hill. the speed limit is 65 at the top, and about a mile or so down the road there is a stop sign. it works out pretty well, if i kill it at the top i will coast down right at the speed limit, which does drop as you go down the hill. by the time i hit the stop sign i'll be at about 25 or so, so there is still enough speed to either start the engine with the clutch (bad for the clutch, yes i know) if i don't have to come to a complete stop (I do turn right and there is just a yield sign for me) or stop and use the starter to fire it back up. there is very little extra fuel used to start a car than to keep it running.

I try and double clutch as much as possible when upshifting and downshifting this is why...

the synchro's DO wear down, and the more in sync the engine and tranny are (which double clutching improves), the less wear you put on the synchro's.

I wont downshift unless I am somewhere where I can doubleclutch. But even then the 2.0 creates hardly any drag so its almost pointless to downshift to slow you down, its more of a tool to use for going in and out of corners.

As far as upshifting, its not necessary, but it helps. It also makes you slower (if you do it right anyway) so its definately not a racing trick like mr deisel says (just watched f+f last night, go figure)
