Should I trade my rare AWD for a g85 Cobalt? How does your SS handle?

Hey guys,

I am new here and relatively new to Chevy in general. I haven't really been a fan of FWD or Chevy for a while (had a 1959 Chevy Apache with a corvette 327 for a while). However, I recently got offered an '06 Cobalt SS g85 edition as a straight trade for my '90 Celica All-Trac. The guy is nice enough and the car is in my favorite color, not to mention a lot younger. Granted my car has a hell of a lot more mods and about 70 more HP. Anyway I looked up some reviews and apparently they are great cars. But I was wondering (from REAL SS owners, not just reviews) if I could get some testimonials to how your SS (with the LSD) handles? How is the understeer/torque steer situation? How heavy/light, connected/disconnected is your steering? What kind of gas mileage do you get and how is maintenance with a supercharged car?

Thanks guys for the help.

Oh and if anybody is interested, here is my CL ad, I will post up the full ad in the classifieds.

TW: 1990 Celica All Trac $7k This Week Only!

Is there a way for you to keep the Celica and get a Cobalt too? A Celica like that plus all wheel drive don't come too often. It's almost like trading in a 1986 Toyota Corolla GTS (AE86) for a Cobalt...

Your car is beautiful. I've only seen one in person. So rare. If you can keep it, you should. If you really want to sell/trade, a Cobalt SS is a nice car.

My opinion: Keep the Celica, great car, I have 3 just GT tho... But the benefits of the cobalt is you get a much better interior. In the celica you can only fit a midget behind you if you are anything over 5' tall.

But with the SS/SC you have a by-pass valve so you only boost when you get on the gas...I like to get on the gas quite a bit and still get 25-28. You can get somewhere around 30+ HWY

I cant compare the 3-SGTE to the LSJ. but the cobalt handles much better than my 5-SFE ever could

They are fun. If you enjoyed modding your current car then you should enjoy modding a balt as well. I thought at first your car was gonna look like the old school AE86 models which I think are the hottest 80's style car lol.

Wow, didn't expect all these answers so fast! Well I may keep it but I am thinking of getting a GC8 or WRX, haven't gotten any trade offers from those guys so just opening up my options. Just think it may be time to get into something... newer.

@Turbalted: Still want one? Lol, it's a funny story, I was considering diving way into debt for a brand new Legacy GT or M5, and I was like... wait, didn't Toyota make a turbo AWD? And there was one for sale down in LA (I'm in Bay Area), so I drove my 240sx down with a buddy to get it.

Still torn on what to do, it would be nice to have cruise control, Air conditioning, a newer-style interior that isn't PLASTIC ...F*&^... and a whipple supercharger sounds SO COOL! But who knows, if I can't find somebody to appreciate the GT-four, I may have to keep her.

@jthomas: 0-60 time? Avg MPG? I like info from everybody, Handling? Any understeer/torquesteer issues with a more powerful Cobalt (i.e. ~250hp modded)? Interior quality? Any "glitches" (such as a gauge going out, or wiring issues) Basic daily driver stuff.

I'd do it, I'd get a SS/TC (Turbocharged) though (I didn't even read so sorry if this has been addressed)

If you're looking for a GC8 or WRX, post on North American Subaru Impreza Owners Club

You may have already done this but if not, do so. TONS of viewers in the private cars for sale section.

You should get a GC8 and make a 22B clone. One of my favorite cars of all time.

Lol, i'll consider I miss the rotary engine in my rx8... So im in the hunt for an rx7 or just gonna wait for the next generation rotary car. Thats pretty tight that you found one locally!

And i think you had a question about the interior. I love the interior in my ss/tc. It looks good, is comfortable and the pioneer sound system kicks ass IMO. But everytime i hit a bump, my entire interior creaks and is sooooo annoying. So i just turn up the music

if all around performance is all you care about, then the cobalt will be a better option. the handling will be much better with about the same straight line performance minus the launch. It's always hard getting rid of a rare car though. I'm not very materialistic though, so I'd probably sell it for something that handles better.

If you get a cobalt, just don't get the s/c version. T/C all the way or turbo the LSJ.

ok i don't have the lsd but that said the cobalt is pretty much the best handling fwd car you can get. seriously. provided your in the right gear and off the gas going around the corner and punch it when you exit, the balt will take corners like paris takes the c**k. its a seriously fun car to drive daily. both the ss.sc and ss.tc were suspension tuned on the nurburgring if that matters to you also the braking feels very confident. i'm never cruising through small tight areas unsure of how my braking/turn in times will go, its very easy to figure out and the car feels light as a feather

i drive mine hard all the time. if you want more testimonials click here its a thread i started because i was wondering how maitenance/problems go as well. the verdict is, these cars take a beating and really **** doesn't usually go wrong with them. LNF's (tubro cobalts) seem to have more issues.
https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/2-0l...v1-0-a-265132/

modding this car is easy as ****, u can be pushing 260 horse with a stage 2 kit, header, downpipe and intake pretty much for 500-1000 bucks. best power/money ratio ive seen. and i'm sure youve heard the noise the lsjs make.

i get 24 city 35 hwy beating on my car daily.

interior is plastic, yes. but it is decently equipped, the heating and a/c works perfectly, the pioneer sound system is very nice for stock, the shifting feels engaged, the steering feels good.

a very sexy car too. really the only place the cobalt lacks is its build quality. i.e., body panel alignment, headlight fitment, stuff like that. nothing too bad though and its to be expected for a car that was built to go that fast for under 25 grand.

hope that helped! good luck with your decision, and btw thsoe celicas are ******* sexy

it depends on what you want to do with it. superchargers are better for autocross and tight courses.
