New thought. What about buying a used 2.2 engine with about 50k on it and completely rebuild it with upgraded internals. Can you you buy just a motor exactly the same type as what you have and just swap it out with the current one? I would be able to reuse all of the current harnesses and connections right?

4th gen dude and keep the g5 as a daily. I love mine wouldnt give it up for anything and with 3k youll be running low 12s high 11s. whatever you put into the g5 you can turn around and put half of it into a ls1 and still be faster

Now that I think about it more building a up a used 2.2 sounds like a much more fun project to me, which is the goal after all, to have fun. The benefits I see from it are that I can take my sweet ass time working on it at a steady pace, wont take up a whole lot of space, no added costs aside from parts. Of course I'm currently blinded by the desire to do this project to see the negatives, so lets hear 'em. What kind of gains could I expect with just the built motor, hdr,dp,ctbk, intake? And does anyone have an answer to my question about whether or not you can just swap out the engine and be good to go?

U going to sc the g5 or turbo it? Zzp makes kits for both and cost the same. Turbo gives u more torque too. Any advantage of getting sc over turbo? G5 is daily driver when not riding motorcycle

I would go supercharged and it would be my DD, thats why I would build on a different motor other than stock, so that if something were to go wrong I could probably swap back to stock in a day or two. Yeah it is fwd but I don't really have any desire to go more than 350hp, cause after that I think I would just lose drivability. But that gets me thinking about doing the project with a miata instead, since it's rwd and light. Anybody have any experience with them? Cause I could pick one up for $1500, and that give me a lot of room for upgrades.

honestly, if you want a project car, keep it rwd and v8. investing in the cobalt is fun as hell, believe me, i know, but itll never have the same returns as investing in a v8 powered car.
You can probably do the v8 miata for like 8k. miata for 5k, swap kit for 1.5k, ls1 for 1k, and $500 in miscellaneous. You'd have a powerful lightweight beast that stomps on everyone

Yea, but in the end it's still a Miata. I'd rather drive my cobalt than that .
I'd go with RWD/V8. If I had space/money I'd love to get something like that to roll around with in the summer. Would be fun.

Meh, I'm okay with driving a "girls cars" as long as it's fun, and the cost of the project doesn't seem to bad either. Might have to throw together a rough parts list tomorrow to get a better idea of cost.

Well, with further research I found that most of these projects easily get to $12,000 when factoring in all the little things, so I'm leaning towards boosting again with a valve spring kit.

Boosting a 2.2 auto could get expensive as well ...... I would keep your current car as a daily and find a 50-60K mile LS1 Fbody and have some fun . The 4th gens are coming down in price now that the new camaro's are out and they are a killer deal if you can find a decent one . Some 100K mile LS1's are still as quick as they were when they had 20K on the odo.
