If the smell is coming from the hvac there is a tsb on it and they will install a extra fan that runs when you shut the car off to dry it out .Also they will spray bomb the vents and hvac to kill the fungi.

My car had a weird smell to it....it turned out to be a wet cabin air filter....my sunroof and windshield were leaking and It got wet somehow an smelled like moldy cardboard....so I took it in and made the dealer clean it and replace the filter

Yep, this is true. I've got that part, the fan, installed on my car. It scares me everytime it goes on when the car is off.

filter is 'behind' your glove box. open glove box, look over it and you'll see it...

Pollen accumulation can stink up the cabin pretty bad too. Spray the vents, clean up the cabin & change the cabin filter and you should be fine.
Mildew/fungi under the spare tire reeks too. I've had water accumulate there in a car I previously owned.

ok well I'll be changing out that filter tomorrow or sunday, and investing in some febreeze and we'll see whats what. It aint me, Im a clean freak. I thought maybe somebody sharted (****/fart) on my seat. It wasnt that. Then I looked in every conceivable place hoping to find a dead mouse, or a piece of food ANYTHING. Wasnt that. I cleaned my interior thoroughly twice and it still wouldnt get rid of the smell. The smell goes away almost as soon as I start the car but when i go out in the mornings, or after work its there. and YES I have seen that seinfeld episode!!! Im positive it is something either IN the HVAC or some kind of mold that isnt drying out. I'll post back on Monday.

Seriously, start with the cheapest possibility, then work from there. Cabin air filter. Every 20000 miles. $12-20 depending on where you go.

Alright, its been 2 days and I havent smelled anything. I changed out the cabin air filter which was pretty much black and had leaves in it. Cranked the AC to 4 and sprayed febreeze in the intake vents. Seems to have worked thus far. Now when I get in in the morning Im not greeted by that lingering fart smell. Smells like new car and febreeze. Amazering. thanks guys!

Well my dealer knew what I was talking about but then told me they can't do the fix unless you take it in there smelling all nasty. What sucks is mine doesn't do it all the time (and the air fresheners probably didn't help my situation), just every once and awhile I get a nasty smell coming out of the vents with the heat, so i'll have to wait for it to act up again and take it in.
