As you probably already found out, the older Vauxhall Astra VXR and the Opel Astra OPC used a different variant of the Ecotec that is port fuel injected and not the same as the LNF used in the Cobalt SS Turbo. It is pretty capable and can hold a good amount of power just like the LNF but with the turbo they used is a lot more peaky in power delivery. Many of the GM Europe cars are just now getting a different variant of the direct injected turbo engine this year that we're also getting in the currently German-built, imported Buick Regal (the LHU with 220hp/258ft-lbs). The changes and small drop in power over the LNF is more than likely due to emissions and economy reasons.
The older, last Astra VXR/OPC before the new Delta-II car this year was co-developed and tested alongside the Cobalt SS with Opel engineers and now defunct GM Performance Division engineers. As I recall GM mentioned in some of their documents they released when the '08 SS Turbo came out that they got better handling and ride out of the Cobalt than the Astra and it was also quicker around the Nürburgring by a significant amount. Some of the special editions of the VXR/OPC did come with 19" wheel and summer tire package which has been the biggest put on a Delta platform car from the factory and the suspension tuning should also be firmer on those Astras but otherwise it is very similar to the Cobalt with only tuning changes (i.e. bushings, springs/dampers, sway bars, etc.)

that sucks... ya they may not have the same quality that european cars do but you gotta give it props where they are due... our cars are half the price of alot of european cars and can outperform them on occasion.. maybe someday they'll realize that just because it's not refined doesn't mean it can't be respected for what it is... a cheap and fast car..

I loved the bit they had on those hatchbacks. That Volvo C30 is a beautiful car and so is the Ford Focus RS 500. Would rather have the C30 Polestar though.
Here's a picture of the Volvo.

Every one should write to them
AETN - A&E Television Networks
This is the list of emails...
Come on guys , I really wanted them to do a version of , this is the new Civic SI and this is the old Cobalt SS kind of thing... Or a MS3 new civic and a TC ....
This car really has been a hidden gem like an article once said..
Its pretty beastly for what it is and what it isn't .. Not trying to brag it up but damn, we get no love.
Oh man I watched that episode , If they made that Volvo I'd be down the road doing paper work right now..

What a pitiful excuse for a show. I can't stand it. Too many "car guys" rely on that shitty show for all the knowledge they will ever have about cars-and let it sway their opinions too much. They're cheezy. I can't stand their review format. All they're after is the shock factor. They USED to be far better, before they became this corny chuckle monster that they are now. Lame.
