Michelin X-Ice are great. It rides smoother without the low-profile rubber. They seem to handle good on dry road too. Obviously, they offer no-where near the grip of the Pirellis', but that isn't what I bought them for. Their snow and ice traction is fantastic. Didn't slide unless you hammered the brakes.
If you don't have too serious of a winter, look into getting Bridgestone Blizzaks or something similar (winter performance tire) in the stock size. They will offer much better traction in the winter, while still retaining good dry pavement performance. Only problem is they are expensive.

dunlop M3 vs vredstein Wintrac extreme
here are the 2 tire choices I am contemplating on 17"
the vredstein Wintrac extreme's are $20 more per tire but I have to go to a 205(only size option from them) which changes my OD. They are evil looking!

the dunlop M3 are cool as well and I can get a 215 to keep the OD the same as stock
