On another note, was in pepboys here in CT and they had a LOT of choices for filters now all with the same adaptor rings.
Maybe we can get AEM to do a GP on their new filters that they developed with no oil, they have a 3.25" filter that would be PERFECT!

I did the airbox mod and wow the engine sounds awesome. I drove by a couple people and punched it and it looked like i scared them.. lol I disconnected the neg termial of the batt and the check engine light came on even when i disconnected it. but i drove it about 1 day and needless to say the CEL went off. Great mod. I bought the Spectre 8132. It was a Red filter with all adapters, it was $27.99 at pep boys

i posted the possible reason for this before. the k&n filter people ar eputting on is just too big. get a smaller filter

what filter is it?
can you put the bottom of your airbox back on with that filter or not? it looks like it is one size bigger than the one i got but it is the same brand

I can..... the CEL came back on today... First I let the neg termial off for about 2-3mins... the CEL stayed on.. i did that about 2 times... CEL stayed. then I left it off overnight. Got up next morning CEL still on then it went off around afternoon or so and now it just went on this morning.. I dunno what the deal is?!? How dumb... The car is WAYYY too picky

I remember from my LS1 Camaro that after using A K&N filter, sometimes a bit of the filter oil would drift onto the MAF and set off a code, so I cleaned the MAF and did the normal rinse and dry filter procedure and the code went away.....
As was said before, a little oil does go a long way.....
By the way, nice to meet you gents....

so, if i wanted to do this on a 2.2 liter cobalt, would it be safe enough to just remove all the tubing before the actaul airbox like the sound deadener tubes and just keep the stock air filter until i get a regualt cai or turbo kit, if its not safe please explain why in detail since i cant see any danger in doing so

I did the airbox modification tonight and am very pleased with the results. Trimming that rubber piece perfect to fit was kind of a pain, but we got it on nice and tight. Car runs really good and the blower noise is sweet. No CEL yet after 100 miles so we'll see how it goes. I did reset the battery for a few minutes before I started the car back up.
Also, I used about half the oil that came with the filter after oiling it lightly with some K&N oil I had left in a spray can. It is easier to ensure complete coverage on the filter with a colored oil. I filled in with some clear in the other spots when I was done with that. How often should I check the filter? I figured every 10k or so...
Thanks for the great how to!!

We are definitely getting some good mileage out of this thread! Congrats and your welcome! Considering the airbox is behind the plastic deflector I would say 10k is fine, on my SRT with the filter in the same spot with no airdam I need to clean it every 5-6k picks up every damn thing...
BTW I will be updating this post with pics of the new AEM Dryflo filter in the place of the oiled filter...

So just this filter ALONE is suppose to make 8 more hp from what i've been reading? So why wouldn't anyone just buy the DryFlow Filter instead of getting a whole intake system? Obviously with the stock airbox still there i guess you can say it's not a TRUE CAI but the idea is the same

I have the AEM dryfilter on my car without the bottom of the box on. It allowed for the supercharger to scream loud as hell, and I have never had a code before, during, or after the install. I have had the filter on for 500+ miles too! The car has a little more oomph, and the power delivery also is a lot smoother too. For close to fifty bucks, it's a great mod!

Just to try it someone with a K&N CAI getting a CEL try swapping out the K&N filter with the AEM DryFlow and see what happens. Just curious because of the couple posts I have read some people have this filter and have had no CEL at all
Check out this thread AEM DryFilter Thread. According to the AEM Rep he's saying an overal' of 5hp gain with just this filter and they installed the bottom back onto the airbox. From the Dyno graph it showed an 8.5hp gain @ 5500rpms.
