Electrical: How to hardwire a radar detector...
#27
bump and here's why...
hey i have a passport too had for a year, but i'm going to hardwire this week... are you running the "telephone" wire all the way down to you fuse box? or are you using a diff kind of wire?
this is what i have to do the job, do i need anything else?
long phone wire
also the escort harwire kit
add-a-fuse adaptor
tools
i've tired before to run to the fuse box but i can't seem to A) ground the wire and B) when i do have it hooked up with the add-a-fuse it sounds like it's not getting enough power or something kinda like "tick tick tick tick" really soft...
help - lol

Did you jam your fuse tap in pretty good? As for the ground, make sur you use a bolt that's attached to a steel part of your car. There's one such bolt on the passenger's side. You need to unmount the pastic white bracket that has 3 screws and then you'll see it.
I hope this helps you out a bit.

are you guys using a hardwire kit? or phone wire for you escort guys (not sure if the other brands use a phone line)
sorry about all the confusion on this end -

It might. My cell phone on my hip usually sets it off for random chirps here and there. I have a 3-slot cigarette plugin that I use for my radar, cell charger, and XM radio. It's plugged in 24/7, but there's a power switch to it. I jump in, start tha car, and hit tha switch, then just flip it off when I get out.

i wired my vipper with a relay and a switch so it dosent stay running.. all u need to do is run a toggle switch where ever u want make sure its grounded .. from the switch run ground to terminal 85 and run 12vc to the 86 side of the terminal then 30 to the radar and 12vc to 87.. leave 87a blank that way it only turns on with a switch

I see a lot of good questions ,a lot of good suggestions...but quite a few unanswered.
My 17yr old son and I are planning a trip across the US taking route 66 as much as possible. However, there is the dreaded LONG-STRAIGHT run through Texas and Okie. I was hoping to 'lean' on the throttle a little in these spots to save a little time.
With that in mind I've been researching the best 'highway' radar detector. It seems to be the Valentine 1...but when you're back in the city areas, false alarms seem to be prevelent. With that in mind I thought I'd go with the Escort 9500ix. It's almost as good as the "one trick pony" that is the Valentine 1.
Next dilemna is how to wire it. One of the places sells a 'smart wire' with the Escort...so I was considering wiring it into the powered mirror. Has anyone done this successfully? If so, which wires did you end up using?
Any input in regards to this matter would be greatly appreciated.
