My 2 cents for what it's worth.
I removed mine yesterday, job took about 45 minutes. Contrary to some of the posts on this topic, nothing has to be cut or mutilated to remove the silencer and it will drop out the bottom with the splash guard partially removed so you have access to the back plastic rivet that GM and several other manufacturers love.
As far as horsepower and throttle response. I have an 06 2.2 LS non turbo/supercharged. My increases were nominal at best. Throttle responce was better and it was definately louder (almost annoying) when the engine was under load but quickly quieted down when highway speed was reached. I am sure the tc/sc would definately benefit from this mod but the base model in my humble opinion isn't really worth it. I will keep it for the next couple of months and see if my fuel economy improves. If I can get 1 or 2 more mpg out of it I would keep it and recommend it to others. As of now, still on the fence.

Annoying? Are you serious?I hope you dont plan on modding your car then or even getting a new exhaust anytime in the future if you thought this made your car annoying.

Yeah, I know...If it's too loud, you're too old. My intent was not to offend anyone with the post so I do appologise. I have the base model so know that a mod such as this one would not produce much. I bought my car as a economical commuter with a sporty flare to it. I did the mod because it was free and anytime a restriction can safely be removed to allow an engine to breath better is always a plus. I have an 02 Z28 with the LS1. I removed the factory air box and installed an SLP with smooth bellows. Now that added extra torque and horsepower and made it sound awesome. I have respect for the people on here that have 1000's rapped up in their cars and more power to them. This is a good site with a lot of interesting topics and a wide variety of opinions.

Thought I would throw my 2 cents in on this. Just took mine out today, 09 Cobalt Lt...have to say that I can feel and hear a differance. Ofcourse it is nothing major, maybe 2hp but any improvement in this area is good right. The extra sound doesn't bother me, but I guess I can understand why GM would put an air silencer in these cars as the majority of the population would like it nice and quiet.

took mine out a while ago. Not much of a difference at all other then the aftermarket intake noise. And it wasn't hard to do at all and doesn't need the removal of splash guard or cutting anything. It comes right out pretty good....you just have to play with it a bit.

??
Just did this mod, took over an hour to get that damn thing out, had to bend the whole area around the headlights it was brutal..
I noticed that my 2008 2.4 doesnt have that whiney scream anymore it sounds like a more deep bassy one, not bad overall!
If i get a k&n typhoon intake will i have to put that thing back in the car? It was so hard to take out I cant imagine the headache of putting it back in.

no hacking required just turn the steering wheel all the way to the left (or if you have the time, take the wheel off) remove the clips from the wheel well liner and take it out that way. thats what i did and only took me an extra 10 minutes

I did this mod a while back and when I drive I can hear a rattling sound to right were it was at. At first I thought it was just air coming in but I installed a cold air intake later on and it still makes the noise. Any idea on how to stop this or what it might be?

I did this mod before I deployed to AFG, I noitced a slight change in tone when I punched it on the interstate after taking it off. Wasn't to hard to do and a drop in K&N filter makes a lil bit of diff IMO
