It wasn't all that bad to get out actually, the hardest part was finding the clip to get that undone. I found that once it was loose, all I had to do was push it down as far as it would go into the bumper, and then there was enough room to rotate it so it came out pretty easy.
Like you said, doesn't seem to have done much, but if I ever get a CAI I guess I saved some work.
That's where it'd be.

I'm just trying to warn others that are going to do this and expect a difference, you will be disappointed. No horsepower increase, no sound increase, and will just make you have to change your filter more often because more crap will get in there

You must have really done it wrong then.
A) correct, there will be no power increase
B) incorrect. There is a HUGE sound increase. The resonator is no longer filtering out the low frequency it was meant to, and therefore it is ABSOLUTELY present.
C) incorrect, unless you often drive through lakes or ford rivers. The airbox's intake is at the top of the fender, it's not likely to get anything more in it by removing the intake resonator.
It was the first mod that I did when I bought the car, and it sounded much louder at WOT.

Well I stood in front of my car while friend revved, didn't hear crap. Inside the car idk because I have full exhaust out the back.
And if you're like me where they are doing construction every where, yes the filter will get wrecked. I say that because it happened

Just took the silencer out of my 2007 Pontiac G5. Yes, there is a difference in sound, at least from inside of the car. I also noticed a bit better throttle response. This should not shorten the life of your air filter in any way... there is no prefilter or anything inside of the silencer to prevent crap from reaching your air filter.
Had to remove several bolts under the bumper and the wheel well to get enough room to get the underside screw out and release the pin. No big deal. I'd say it took all of fifteen minutes.
