Air Bag Senser replacement on Cobalt SS 2008

Hi,

I sometimes get an error message: AIR BAG SERVICE on my Cobalt SS, 2008 (coup 2 doors, no turbocharger). If I try to restart my car several times, the error message disappears. My service repair shop recommends to replace its air bag senser but they charge me over $300. Is there any simple way to replace the senser by myself.

I appreciate any shared suggestion/guidelines/photos/videos of how to do it myself.

Thanks,

Billy

Did they tell you what it is that actually tripped the codes?

The mechanic man did not find any code when he diagnosed the air bag system. However, they recommended to replace the air bag sense on the driver side.

is there any suggestions to replace the sense for my cobalt ss 2008, coupe, two doors, and no supercharger?

If you are getting a message or light there is a code. If there is no code, they are just guessing, wasting your time and money.

Is there any simple way to get the code on error: AIR BAG SERVICE without a code reader?

You will need a scan tool that can communicate with the BCM such as a GM tech 2 or equivalent. Most lower cost scan tools can only read codes from the ECM. You can try to reach out to the mechanic that diagnosed the issue and see if they found any pending, historic or current DTC codes to support their intentions. I wouldn't recommend throwing parts at it until you get a code to help diagnose the root cause.

That error that pops up can be a number of different parts associated with the air bag system that aren't just the air bag. It should have a BCM code, you might have to take it to a GM dealer and pay a diagnostic fee to find out what sensor is actual causing the error code.
