Dyno test of Vibrant headers for Cobalt SS !

Ok guys, we have had a lot of interest in the Vibrant header package for the Cobalt SS recently.

So, we decided to dyno test the part, and show you guys the power it makes.

Heres the details.

First, the factory header and downpipe.

This is actually not a bad design for a factory piece, but theres several problem areas. First, look at the bung for the oxygen sensor. That part of the piping goes from nearly 2.75 inches all the way down to about 2 inches. Also, some other parts of the piping is as large as 3 inches, but then necks down to 2 inches in some areas. Lastly, in the collector for the header, where the four primaries merge into one, it is a whopping 1.6 inches in diameter!

ENTER the Vibrant 4 into 1 Stainless steel header!

This piece is beautifully constructed of polished stainless steel, and has nice smooth bends, a nice smooth collector that merges the gases from the 4 cylinders into one, and a high flow catalytic convertor downpipe unit.

Dyno results :
Our 05 project Cobalt SS car already had a K&N air intake, and Vibrant exhaust, and a 3.1 inch pulley to increase the boost.

We installed the header, and noticed a very good gain in power. Peak hp gained was 8 hp and 3 lbs of torque, but throughout dyno, there were gains of 7-12 hp and torque. The blue line is the HP and torque after the header was installed, the red is the power before.

We're very pleased with this header from Vibrant. Overall, with adding the 3.1 pulley, and the header, our cars power went from 219 hp and 180 torque to 240 hp and 202 torque at the wheels.

For more details on this header, and additional photos, check out modernperformance.com

Price for the Header and downpipe with high flow catalytic convertor is $609.99.

This particular header will only work with the Cobalt SS, HOWEVER we have a header that is exactly the same (From Vibrant) except for a few minor changes that is designed for the Ion Redline. Its priced at $609 as well.

We have no doubt youd make the exact same power levels, maybe even more with this header installed on your Ion Redline.

Nice--I've been waiting for someone to do a dyno before I plinked down that kind of cash for the Vibrant setup (although I already wanted it pretty badly)

Its a great piece, and we have had a business relationship with Vibrant now for close to 8 years, and they have always put out top notch quality products, and they have stood behind them!

I really like the fact that this piece has a race catalytic convertor on it. That way, you can get the most power available, while still being legal. I have Vibrants race catalytic convertors on several of my cars, including my 95 Dodge Neon 2.4 swapped car and they work great for me.

Awesome to hear. I have their cat-back and LOVE the sound of it. How much do you think I will lose on the bottom end by adding their header and DP?? Any idea on how the sound may change?

Bump for some input

If you have the Magnaflow, along with this header it will be louder.

The problem is, that most exhausts that are 3 inch, dont absorb much of the sound frequencies. Thats why most 3 inch exhausts are louder than stock, and are even a tad bit raspy.

If you dont like the sound of your car, before or after installing any exhaust components, we have a whole line of inline mufflers, and resonators available. You could easily take your car to a muffler shop, and have them weld in either one (resonator reduces sound by about 5-8%, inline muffler 18-25%) for less than $20 or so, and resonators cost $40, muffler $65.

You will not lose any torque at any point across the rpm band.

It might be hard to see since the image of the dyno is small, but look at the lowest point on the dyno, at 3100 rpms, there is a gain of over 10 ft lbs of torque before and after !!

Sound will increase by probably a good 10-15%.

well im on 2.5" piping with only a magnaflow muffler..didnt really see a point in buying a catback for 300+bux when i can make my own for about 150...same design just not stainless steal

No there isnt.
Frankly, the car would be obnoxiously loud without a cat. For the 3-4 hp difference youd make without a catalytic convertor, over this high flow catalytic convertor, I would NOT do it.

Plus, in most states, not having a catalytic convertor will make it impossible to pass emissions testing, so for just about all our customers it wouldnt be worth it.

With you being in Chicago, youll notice within a year that your exhaust is severely rusting/falling apart if its not stainless. Hopefully at least you have aluminized steel at minimum.

Thank you for the input Cory. As soon as I get some extra funding, this will most likely be the direction that I go.

No it doesnt.
HOWEVER, for $25, we can take a stainless steel bung, and have it welded onto the header for you and ship it off to you. That would make installation easier for you.

Just call in your order, be sure to mention that you were told you could have an additional bung put in for $25 and we will take care of it.
