So I've been considering exploring other options for a car for the rest of college.

I got the Cobalt because I needed a car to last me through college.

The deal was, I buy and pay for the car, my parents pay for the insurance.

Insurance is about $2,280 a year on this base cobalt.

A early 2000s Jetta is around $1,500 or $1,600 a year. And cheaper to buy.

Reason I didn't get a VW is because they are a bitch to work on.

I'm trying to save my parents some money as they're money is really tight paying for my college (until next year when I'll be taking out my own loans).

I'm thinking, as much as I love my Cobalt, take my time and sell it for a good price. Then buy a Jetta.

I mean I'm even open to other suggestions if you guys have them. I just don't want to make my parents get to the point where they're having a hard time with money.

So I'm going to start browsing for ideas on a car, preferably $7,000 and cheaper. My loan on my cobalt is $7,060 or something like that. I got it for $9,900.... yeah it was a rip off now that I know.

So what are your thoughts on Jettas? No, I won't become one of those VW douche bags we all hate lmao

How much more expensive to work on are they?

From what you know, do they break a lot more often then say a Cobalt?

eh, anything can break. to me it all depends on how it was previously treated, if it was well maintained it will last, if not well then anything will need money to be throw at it. if you're serious i personally think you should look for like a 2002-2004 VR6 5 speed with fairly low miles. i've worked on and build a bunch of many early year Rabbits so i know a little bit about VW's, not too much about the newer ones thou

Think it'd be worth it to get a VR6 over a 1.8t?

If I got a VR6, I wouldn't be boosting it or anything. It would stay just the V6. I was thinking the 1.8t would be a nice foundation of a stock turbo.

well your insurance shouldn't be that high. if you get speeding tickets then they add substantially to your your insurance per year. it ends up being something like 300$ extra on insurance per year per ticket. I'd know cuz i had a bunch before an my insurance was high. now that they are all cleared and i switched companies, i pay about 1100$ a year on insurance

Well I'm also 19. They love that ****, just because 90% of people under 21 suck at driving.

I've had one actual speeding ticket, but it got reduced to no points and only a fine.

It mostly because of the texting and driving now that insurance is getting higher. Like nothings that important that you have to text while your driving. If its important call the person and pull off on the side of the road. People i swear are gettig dumbet and dumbet as i get older

if only i knew wat dumbet was.

yea but your a base cobalt so your insurance should still not be that high, try searching around and seeing if you can get it lowered by switching companies. i'm with Progressive at the moment and they are pretty good to me.

Take out school loans. Ask for more than you need. Collect glorious refund check from school. Blow money on car.

I speak from experience

So does anyone elses exhaust hang pretty low right underneath the car? Mine hangs like an 1-2" lower than the car. Is there a way i could push it up more so i can go lower with the coils?

Mine hangs really low.

If it's stainless steel, you have to either get someone with a mandrel bending machine to bend it a little bit or try to clamp it up as high as you can.

If it's aluminized, just take it off and bend it yourself

I'm resisting temptation to buy new things for my car until I figure out if I should just keep it or not. I'll probably end up keeping it and supercharging it next summer... but I still have no idea.

Zip ties Mike, zip ties. My driveway down at school has a horrible dip an if I don't hit it just right it scrapes, I'm gonna try to pull it up a bit with some zip ties or try to find some better exhaust hangers

My exhaust gets way to hot, it'll melt zip ties in a second.

I'm going to see if I can rig up some of those metal piping clamps around the exhaust to the hangars

The reason your insurance is so ridiculously high is because the cobalt was such a cheap car when it came out that a lot of kids were getting them as first or second cars, the more people that wreck a certain car the more insurance will go up for that car, it doesn't help how young you are but honestly my insurance was cheaper for my ss/sc then what it would have been for a base cobalt..... Crazy right??
