I wouldn't say there's a wrong way. Just a right way, and a half way. His car was also a driver, mine isn't. The time it sees the road is the drive to and from the track. You wouldn't dream of dailying a car with these springs. I don't blame him for using footballs. It's a cheap, effective, and easy way to stiffen the rear.

You don't hear outlaw 10.5 crews saying "i think we need another half a football in the left spring" after making a pass down the track. lol
