'09 SS Rattle just above steering column
This isn't my vehicle but I've heard this noise on a customer's car. He actually mentioned reading about a fix for this noise on this forum... Search is a bitch so here it goes...
The noise is coming from just above the steering column area. It'll happen on a cold start until you grab the steering wheel, then it stops. May also occour around 2k RPM as I've noticed Ecotecs in general like to vibrate around there. The noise can also be replicated with a mild to moderate pound on the steering wheel with a closed fist. Its a dull metal on metal noise.
I've done a visual and the pedal brackets, steering column brackets, etc are tight.
Its not the intermediate shaft, the noice will occour without turning the wheel.
The noise is isolated to the cabin.
Any help?

I had/have one in the same area. Mine wasn't metal on metal though. It was the plastic piece that is around the instruments. For me when I applied pressure on the plastic bellow the right gauge it went away. I actually forget which gauge is there. Been awhile since I drove it.

Maybe I should also add, I have also heard it in pretty much the same conditions as the other people have heard it. It took me about a year to track down that rattle. Just haven't fixed it yet.

Not actually my car, but its the plastic that goes around the whole instrument cluster. When I put my hand on the plastic bellow the tach, the rattle went away.
Found a picture of the part.
Sorry for the big pictures. I only have my phone so this is the best I could do.

I tracked it down today... well I believe I did.
I was able to eliminate the noise by applying pressure on the steering column itself. The dash doesn't rattle while still tapping. Also, if you tilt the steering column to its upper limit and hold it firmly upwards when you lock the tilt mechanism it may lessen or stop the rattle.
