The block itself is interchangable but just putting the 2.2 in an lsj car wont work.

Kind of a newbie here, but why is that? Is it a size issue or the wiring is different?

The crank trigger wheel is different and the cam sensor is different

The bare blocks are interchangeable but like Slowbalt2000 said the crank trigger wheel is different. As long as your head is OK and you are still using an LSJ head the cam sensor is in the head so you don't have to worry about that. As long as you use the LSJ crank 2.2 block will work. However you will no longer have piston oilers or an oil cooler.

An angle grinder would probably do the trick
