2006 Cobalt LS gas tank leak

I've recently started to notice the smell of gas around my Cobalt. I have looked up online and it appears there is a recall for some Cobalts built around the same time as mine for a faulty fuel pump housing. I was wondering if anyone knew what exactly failed. Does the housing just crack or is it a fitting or line? I guess I am just going to have to drop the tank and find out but I thought I would see if anyone had any insight on what could be going wrong. There isn't enough of a leak to drip or anything but the tank is coated and clearly wet from leaking. EDIT: There is a safety recall associated with this problem which includes my VIN so I should be getting this fixed for free. INFO ON THE RECALL

im assuming the pump is similar to the lsj one, and its on the top side of the tank. It looks like your issue is where the fill line comes into the tank.

There was a recall not too long ago having to do with the smell of fuel. Not sure if the pipe was rusting or what though.

It does look like that in these pictures. Unfortunately I couldn't get my phone in a good position to take a picture of the top of the tank going back but the gas actually looks like it is coming from the top of the tank further back IRL.

interesting. it defies gravity lol.

there is an O-ring on the metal ring that holds the pump that could be bad. I think i have the oring if you need it let me know. Mine is for an LSJ so not sure if its a 100% fit.

I looked online and my VIN falls within the range of recalled vehicles. http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/acms/cs...9v419-3422.pdf

However, it does say that it is not all vehicles in that VIN range. I went to the GM recall information page and entered my VIN but all that came up was the ignition switch recall. It's looking like my car isn't covered under this recall but obviously should be as I have gas leaking for no reason.

I'm trying to wait and verify that my car is not covered before I drop the tank. In the off chance that it is I wouldn't mind getting the repair done for free. I don't want to lose that chance by messing with it until I am sure.

BTW the recall states that the plastic return or supply port on the modular reservoir assembly can crack. It this is what actually happened I need to get it repaired ASAP before I lose fuel pressure or something. Would it be best to just go back in with an OEM pump or are there other products out there that would be an upgrade?

I called the local GM dealer and it appears my car is covered under the recall. Will follow up to let others know for sure.
