2006 Le5 Cobalt Loping

Hey guys, I searched the forums and could not find a definite answer to this issue so any insight would be helfpul. I recently threw a P0011 code and replaced my intake and exhaut CMP sensors. While i was under the hood of my car I decided to clean out the PCV line with compressed air and to clean out my throttle body. I removed the PCV line and intake cover cleaned out the PCV line and then used a clean rag and throttle body cleaner to clean TB. Once I reconnected everything to the car it started idling and 2250 rmps. Now when i drive and put the car in Nuetral it revs to 4000 rmps and then settles around 2250rmps again. Has anyone found out a resolution to this problem or will I have to go the reflash route at dealership? Any assistance would be useful. Thanks ahead all.

A reflash won't do anything. It's how you cleaned the throttle body. After cleaning it, its normal to have a higher idle than normal for a while, but not 4k at idle. Did you take off the throttle body to clean it?

I had maybe a 1500 rpm idle or so for a couple days, then went back to normal at like 850.

I left the throttle body connected to the block. I used a brand new clean shop towel and sprayed the cleaner onto the rag and wiped away all of the carbon. I did manually move the butterfly to try to get to the excess carbon on the otherside and clean it. Then replaced the intake. The car idles at 2250 rpms but occasionally it revs higher, when braking, this is only happened once though. I have disconnected the battery twice for over 30 mins with no resolution. I have not tried the relearn procedure on the idle though.

Some say manually moving the butterfly damages the throttle body. Some say it does not.

Also check for vacuum leaks.

There are no vaccuum leaks. I know that for sure b/c I've had to mechanics check it. Does anyone have the idle relearn procedures for our car? After hours of searching google and the forums this appears to be a regular issue, and i would like to know if anyone if familiar with said procedure.

Gmpartsdirect.com - for $31 and change a piece - cost me $75 total I believe.

Before you go to sleep tonight disconnect your battery again and leave it disconnected over night. For some reason 30 mins aren't enough. Or you couldn't disconnect it and touch the terminals together for a few seconds and then reconnect. Same thing happened to me when I cleaned mine.

I appreciate the idea, when I get home tonight I'm going to completely remove the throttle body, clean both sides completely and then reconnect it. I'll try to do the relearn, if that doesn't work I'm going to disconnect the battery overnight. Dee - when it happened did you remove the throttle body or just clean it while connected, and to confirm the battery disconnect fixed it?

I tried recleaning the throttle body - removed a lot of excess dirt and carbon from it. Reconnected it to the car and followed the reset procedures to the letter. The car adjusted as normal but as soon I drove it the revs went back up to 2k rpms. I pulled the battery overnight, and started the car this morning, reset to 800 rpms and was fine. I let it set assuming it learned the new air/fuel ratio. Left for work and as soon i as hit the accelerator it revved back up to 2k rpms and stayed there at idle. Any other ideas?
Elec - ill get the part number for you when i get home tonight.

Bad throttle body or intake leak is my guess.

Vacuum leaks cause stumbling and lower RPM's. Also hesitation while accelerating. I am not expierencing any of those symptoms. The car is overreving at idle, drives fine at normal operational RPM's. If the throttle body was defective it would be driving erratically and would throw CEL's for a bad sensor or too lean/too rich. Looks like I'm on my way to a visit to the dealership.

are you an auto or manuel. our ecotec's are actually know for doing that after cleaning the throttle body. if your auto then the dealer might have to do the relearn with the tech 2. but manuel you can relearn it your self. i actually did it that way. then learned about the battery deal after. sorry that didn't work out for you tho.

Keep us posted, marcwo. If I can be of any assistance, get in touch via pm here on the forum (include your name, phone and address, last 8 of your VIN and approximate mileage, and the name of your dealership).

All the best,
Sarah

Check the throttle cable connected with the accelerator pedal, it may require lubrication for better throttling actions. Also check the butterfly valve for proper functioning.

Any updates on this? I've had this issue for a year now. It started doing it after a TB clean. Another thing i've noticed in my case is that it works fine before it reaches normal work temp, but once it get hot or in stop and go traffic, it tends to idle at 1.5k.

I'm at that point right now. The only sure fire absolute resolution to the problem is a reflash at your local dealership. Should cost you about $120.
