Thumbs down Alarm won't stop

OK I'm in a sticky situation. I broke my only keyless entry remote last night after my alarm was armed. I open the door i expected the alarm to go off until it recognized the key in the ignition... drove around for a minute with the alarm going off... me and my friends laughing of course cause people will think its a stolen car or something... alarm stops... 1 minute later WHILE driving still it goes off again. I'm like wtf so it goes off a minute later and stays off... i pull up to a friends house to drop him and his girlfriend off... they open the door while the car is on... the alarm goes off... i drive away alarm shuts off after a minute... i get home around 4 a.m. shut the car off... alarm GOES OFF!!!. i recently was laid off, I'm out of warranty so i cant just go to the dealer and say hey i need a new keyfob heres 70 bucks for it... i have zero money... can i disable the alarm? why wont my car recognize my key? or should i disable the horn and deal with it until i can obtain a new keyfob... thanks guys and gals... it was funny at first... now its embarrassing.

Yeah that is where it is, I don't remember exactly which option it was, but I turned mine on when it was broken into a couple of years ago. I think it says passive...

turn the key on, hold both buttons down for 3 seconds then cycle through until it says security. you can set it to passive or RKE. Not sure what RKE stands for but I know that mine didn't go off when the doors were opened and set to RKE.

rke - remote keyless entry

it should be set to go off only if the door is unlocked without using the key fob after locking with the fob. think the fact that its staying on indicates there are other issues.

did you try putting the key in the door lock and turning it both ways? I know in my rx7 that it would disarm the alarm.

I don't think 07+ has that feature to turn it to passive. I've never seen it.

The alarm is through the BCM... I'm not sure if the dealer can turn it off though via the Tech II.

If you at least want the horn to stop beeping for the alarm, you could remove the driver side headlight and disconnect the plug for the horn if there isn't a fuse for the horn itself in the fuse boxes.

For the RKE, you should be able to get a new remote on ebay for much cheaper and have it programmed.

Oh, btw, do you still have the broken RKE? If so, was it just the battery clip that busted when you sat on it? The battery clip is known for issues and all it takes to fix it is a soldering iron.

Buying used can do that. I had a friend buy a 4 Door LS. He called me asking why his alarm kept going off. I thought it was odd that he had an alarm for a LS (He told me it didn't have power windows or a remote when he bought it...) that didn't have power options, and when I went over to look at it, I realized it had power locks.

So I asked him where he bought the Cobalt and he mentioned some hole in the wall used car dealer.

Usually the dealership does make sure that cars come with the fobs, but the hole in the wall or even private sellers don't.

Unplug the battery, should kill the alarm. Then just don't lock it using the inside door panels just use your key to turn the locks without arming the alarm.
