Well first of all be patient, don't immediately jump on the first one in your price range you find. Obviously run a car fax report on it. Check to see if the rims are curb rashed, test drive it, see how much boost it makes. 15lbs ish is stock. If it has bosch map sensors on the intake mani then it's GMS1. Looks for mods that are on it. Look in the trunk under the mat on the build sheet to see if it's a G85, you want that. Check the tire wear and compare to how many miles it was driven to see how hard it was driven. Look over the paint for scratches. Personally, I have had 0 problems with my car, but check the rear breaks for premature wear and scored rotors, most of the SSs will have that. One thing I do on every car I test drive is swerve the car around in a parking lot or something to feel for steering/suspension problems. Listen for obvious noises, but remember that the engine clicks due to the direct injection.

sunroof rattle, rear brakes looking like chewed dog vomit, rear brake calipers seizing, parking brake not engaging fully, squeaky steering wheel (not really a big deal), Paint on the inside bottom of the doors getting rubbed off...
haha thats all i've had go wrong with my tc so far.. picked it up for $13,500 with 9800 miles on it in march.
It was fully stock with RPD, LSD, PAL, XM.. I lucked out, the guy that owned it before me bought it brand new in '08 and garage queened it. The brake thing was the only major problem I've had, but that got fixed under warranty and is perfect now.

The G85 package is Limited slip differential and the Performance display on I think it's the 09-10. You'd actually be surprised how easily it is to find one of these cars that cheap, that's how much I got my car for with the same amount of miles, except mines not a G85. The stock pioneer sub sucks, that Alpine 10 you had probably was much better. An aftermarket HU also helps so you can use a low pass filter, that makes the stock speakers MUCH better when you can take the bass out of them.
