Cant change gears ! Suggestions please?

Hello im new here, so i apologize ahead of time for my ignorance with these cars.

I got an 06 SS , it was fine for the first week, but all of a sudden it started with not being able to put it in reverse. i had to push it back and drive home, now i went to go start it to go to school, and it wont let me put it in ANY gears. When i turn it Off, it Sometimes goes into gears, but once i turn it on, it just wont let me, i been reading threads and i read up about the " Roll Pin" might be broken and need to be replaced??

Thanks ahead for any suggestions or ideas

FIrst check your shift cables int he console below the shifter, They could have poped off or come loose. If there all fine and tight it's gotta be the roll pin, DO some searching and you will find a how to on here for replacing that!

Yea i checked that they were still connected and they are, the thing that i have about it being the roll pin, is that i can't change gears when its on, only off. Is there something electrical that comes into play with the roll pin?

Thanks for the reply bro

one thing i didnt think of was it could be your clutch. Can you put it in gear while off hold clutch in and it starts? Just another thing to look into!

I hope the roll pin replacement turns out for you today. Looking forward to an update and if I can be of any assistance (I don't know if you were headed to a dealership to get your clutch checked out -- would just like to make sure everything goes well), please let me know.

So i replaced the Roll Pin, took me about 4 hours, complete pain in the ass, it was pressurized in there and there was absolutely no room to hammer out with the transmission mount on the way, so that had to come off....

Finally out in new roll pin, and problem is still there.

What bothers me is that, when the car is OFF, all the gears go in like butter, and if i start the car in gear, ( In first for example). It goes forward as normal, but then i cant shift into another gear, its like if its locked..

Anyone have any other suggestions? Something electrical perhaps???

Not trying to insult you bro, but did you realize that there is a reverse lock under the shift knob?

You have to pull it up, and then it allows you to go to reverse.

Took me about fifteen min. after i got into the car the first time to realize this lol..

Dead clutch, lol.
Where was the release point of the clutch pedal when you bought it?

Off the floor, really?
When its off and you turn it on in gear, will it not move?
Can you even turn it on in gear for that matter?

You could have blown the synchro's in your transmission which would lead to losing a gear, but not all of them.. This is pretty weird! Are you sure your shift linkage is all good and in tight? Cause if it's not in there correct you will lose all your gears.

May or may not help... Reverse for me is difficult to get into, but an easy for fix for me, is put it into 1st, then reverse. Someone can chime in, I know it has to do with something on how the gears/linkage is setup. But anytime i have a hard time getting in reverse, press the clutch in, go to first gear, with the clutch still in move directly to reverse, and it usually slides right in.

Edit totally misread, and had to change my post.

i'd say synchros op... probly gonna need a new tranny. maybe the guy that had it before you was a gear grinder? idk..

also did you check your related fluids?? idt that would help much but rly i'd say tranny. bet ur clutch is fine and ur shift linkage seems good. not rly anywhere else to turn IMO

I appreciate all yalls input guys.

But yea the clips on links are connected, all the gears go into place without a problem when the car is off, its when i turn on Ignition that i cant seem to go into any of them. It feels JUST like when you try to go to Reverse without pulling up the lock, but its with ALL gears.

I just decided to tow it to a mechanic on Monday morning, at this point im aiming at some simple mechanism problem or electrical problem. Really hoping its not something major like new tranny.

ok.. push and keep the clutch pedal in, put in gear, and try to start it.. Does the car move forward with clutch pushed in? syncros are most likely not the problem being that op is having problems with all gears. I can put my car in any gear when the car is off without pushing the clutch in, so if the clutch is the problem it wouldn't show up like that. could be that your pressure plate is not releasing.
