Cobalt Clutch Clunk
2008 tc cobalt, bought it slightly used, so i have to ask:
Is it common to hear a minor clunk sound from the clutch area when engaging/disengaging it, usually in first or second gear. Also a bit of a clunk noise while shifting into first or second when getting ready to take off from a stop. I have no other TC cobalts around to compare with. Once the car is moving and shifting between gears, there is no noise. Mainly heard at a stop. Probably sounds louder in the car then it does outside. I know manual trans normally make some noises but this one is a bit louder than my other cars. Sounds almost like driveline play.

I had the same problem with my Cobalt... Check your control arm bushings. When they go bad it makes metal hit on metal because the rubber becomes unseated. When you take off and shift gears it makes the control arms move just enough to make that annoying clunk. I hope for you its that because its easily fixed by yourself (if your willing) and relatively cheap. Just don't buy stock AC Delcos bushings because they'll go bad really quickly after installed. Good luck!

Thanks for the info but its nothing to do with my suspension.
The noise is from the clutch, or gear lash in the trans, and might even be normal just wanted to make sure from another TC owner.

Mine does the same thing......typically only from a 1-2 shift going rather slow and gentle. ~6000 miles on my '10 SS/TC. I assumed it was pretty typical but i'd be interested in what others have to say as well!

Sounds like you are hearing the same thing then. It is usually low speed 1-2 shift when it occurs, and sometimes when stopped and putting it back in first before a takeoff.

Clunking sound
I have the same noise going on with my used 08. Took it to the dealer and they said it was normal. Does everyone agree this is normal.

There was a lot of talk about this shortly after the TC's were released. It was deemed normal...something about excess lash if I remember correctly. I'd often wondered if the LSD has anything to do with it, as I know some are known to make noise when turning corner hard, they click (high performance ones, I've heard it for myself), unless that's totally untrue...
Either way, the clutch noise in first, second and sometimes third is completely normal. Mine did this from brand new til I sold it at 54,000kms.
