Coolant in intake manifold. Possible causes?

Hey guys. Had an LSJ a few years back and loved it, unfortunately it ended up being stolen and wrote off. I picked up an non-running 2006 SS this week and the guy I bought it off believed that it had bent intake valves(no idea what he did for trouble shooting.) Anyways I just pulled the head off and all the valves look to be in good shape, the head gasket was blown pretty bad though. I've dropped the head off to be cleaned, resurfaced and inspected and hopefully everything checks out.

However, when I pulled my supercharger off I found that my intake manifold was completely full of coolant/sludge. It was about 2" from the opening in the manifold. I pulled the end plate off and inspected my laminova o-rings and endplate gasket but it all looks to be in good shape. I'll be replacing the o-rings and gasket anyways while it's apart just for peace of mind but I'm just wondering how the intake manifold managed to fill full of water? Will a blown headgasket cause that? Thanks in advance.

Highly unlikely
I suspect to believe it's one of the laminova cores or the seals that caused ur issue.

What Bass Waves said...

Leaking Laminova seals.

The supercharger cooling system is totally separate from the engine cooling system.

Do the cores themselves ever fail? Or just the seals?

I'm not going to say it's impossible, but more than often its the seals that fail not the cores.

i did the dual bypass endplate and pinched one of the orings to the laminova cores. and it puts out a decent amount of coolant in the intake mani pretty quick . so i agree with bass waves and staged07ss. hopefully its not a core i know they are a bit pricey...

I pulled all the o-rings out today and inspected them. Everything was installed correctly and they all looked good. I picked up new o-rings anyways and also dropped my laminova cores off at a radiator shop, they're gonna clean them up and pressure test them for me in the morning so I guess I'll find out tomorrow.

I'm interested to see what you come up with!

Powell has some really good seals that he uses, apparently they're better than the GM ones. I used ZZP's seals when I did my dual-pass upgrade.

I just went to a local industrial hydraulic shop. They sold me a set of upgraded o-rings for $10... No way I was gonna pay what they wanted at the GM dealership.

Got my laminova cores back today. They pressured them all up to 15psi and couldn't find any leaks. I've got the manifold all back together now. Supposed to have my head back tomorrow or Monday as well as my top end gasket kit. Hopefully all is well when I put it back together.

How do you know they are actually an upgrade over the gm o rings??

Tested to confirm this?

The factory gm o-rings are soft rubber (low pressure). They sold me high pressure o-rings, designed to hold a couple thousand psi.
