cooling temp question???????

i was wondering about the operating teperature of the 06 ss/sc , because when in traffic my temp. reaches up to 215 degrees , but when i drive its 180 -184 degrees. my question is .... is it normal to be 215 degrees in traffic????? Or is there something with my temp sensor or fans??????????

My dealer mechanic told me as long as it dont go over 220 degrees your good but in the city it will be hotter cause your standing still not in clean cool air like you would be on the highway thats for the ss/sc stage 2 installed cause mine got hot like to 208 but its good now back to 180 or so

It is normal for the temp on these cars to go up as high as 220-225 while sitting still. One tip if you are worried about it though. Turn on your AC. This cuts one of the fans on, and cools the car down. I have seen one been left idling for 4 hours with the AC on, and it hovered between 190-199. Hope this helps.

That is perfectly normal. When I am driving my water temp is about 177-183, but at idle for extended periods of time it will reach about 225 before the fans come on and cool it back down.

Normal temp is from 185-225.

Any higher and the fan should be running and cool it back down.

yea well with my 2.2 the car never ever ran over 192 degrees and in traffic 199 maybe even 201, but now all of the sudden now it gets to 221-230 and being car guy who has biuld motors, this is not good, exp with aluminum which warps way to easy. The dealer says it normal. Obviously i disagree, a change in temps means something has changed or is failing. I plan on putting in a new thermostat for sure. Also I have seen oil quality and brands cause the motor to run hotter than usual.

Wow, glad I'm not the only one. I was worried when mine went over 195 while sitting in traffic.

The fan doesn't initially kick on till around 200 or so. The second fan doesn't kick in till around 220 or so ( I don't remember if we have two fans or if it is a low speed/high speed switch). So it is normal to see 200 + in traffic. In hot weather it is very easy to see 220 + in traffic. If the coolant temps get above the 230s then you may have some problems.

i heard theres a way to use hptuners to tune those fans to kick em on earlier which might be a good thing to look into maybe set one off at 190 instead of 200 and the other at like 205 besides 220

Man, here in Vegas I get up to 225 in traffic like nothing. In the winter, I averaged about 190-210.

In the summer, like now, when it is 90+ outside I easily hit the 220s in traffic.

In the winter I usually don't see much above 200 or so.

When I get a chance to use HP tuners on my car the first thing I will change is to have the fan kick on at 198 and have the second fan kick on at about 210 so I can keep the temps down as much as possible. It took alittle bit of hunting but I figured out how to change the fan speeds and when they kick on.

We usually get a month or so of 30 degree weather or colder. Other then that it is usually around 40s or 50s. When it is 40 or 50 and you sit still for 15 minutes without moving the car will start to heat up... lol. When it is around low 40s to 30s or colder my car never gets hotter then 180.

You must have your fans on all the time to keep the car at 180.

You know what you can do. Get a bottle of Royle Purple Ice Coolant Additive or go to a local parts store in your area and pick up a product called water wetter or something like that. U pour it in your coolant and i makes it run up to 20 degrees cooler. I put the royle purple stuff into my car. Even at ideal in traffic i dont get near 200 degrees. With the temp be around 90

Yup They are always on at 55% instead of the good ole 0% that Chevy likes them to run.

I have set my fans to come on at 205 now instead of 220 like stock... That is just too damn hot. I use water wetter in my coolant for the intercooler, however I don't have it in my radiator. I have read that sometimes it will cause problems with water pumps and don't want to risk it. If something happens to the IC pump that is easy to change out so I'm not worried about it.

Mine are programmed to start at 55% at 196*, and to be on all the time. As soon as the key goes to run the Fan 1 comes on. At start-up both Fans 1 and 2 come on at 55% and stay there unless it gets hotter. But since I have not lit my engine on fire yet it has yet to reach 196* since.
