Crankshaft Position Sensor replacement w/HPT

Does anybody here know if using HPT to complete a case relearn after replacing ckp sensor requires unlocking my vehicle first? or does HPT allow "generic" services like that without unlocking to a car/vin first?

Thats part of the scanner so it shouldnt require you to be unlocked

I've replaced them and not had to re-learn, but I know a local guy was able to do the relearn via the VCM scanner.

I appreciate that. I'm gonna try to get in there after work today and see if i can avoid the relearn. it was running somewhat decently yesterday not getting into throttle, but it's ass today.

In my experience, they either work or don't. If it's running but running poorly, it's probably something other than the CKP.

makes sense. I'm leaning towards this because the codes came up on my OBD2, and because the symptoms match up exactly. ....and when i left work yesterday TO fix it, it died, and would not restart from then on. so i'm thinking it's done for. had t fight to get it home in the dark, switching it out today hopefully.

If you have any other potential ideas, i'm all ears as to what to look into though.

Someone with a Tech2 can do it too. Think there are a couple locals that have them.

I was thinking about that, but the only person in our local group i know of, i don't know that i can get that far with my car once the sensor is replaced if it's still running like **** (won't start at all now). I'm replacing it this afternoon and am going to go from there. man, this is lame lol.

If it's not learned, it will still run just fine, it just might have subpar knock detection and will have a code for the CASE learn not being performed.

I can clear the code and limp to a local garage that's gonna relearn it for me, so i appreciate the knowledge.

That said, getting to the sensor from the top, without removing the starter (because my car died and is on an incline so not willing to lift it) is a BITCH. got it out, and then found that the buttface at O'reillys gave me a camshaft sensor instead. so it should get done today. bit ridiculous for something fairly simple, but it is what it is.

It's not bad once you know where it is, it's kinda in an awkward place, but if you can work in feel-around it's not that bad to get at.

it was awkward, but got it done. Didn't get my anywhere though. throughout the 4 days it was down with no part, i pulled terminals occasionally as i was working on the front end. re-connected everytime i was done working. last night the security and check engine light were clicking/flashing crazy fast and it wouldn't crank, now it won't even show the mileage when i open the door.

My battery is dead enough that a 10 minute charge didn't help, after just a few days of non-use.

You remove anything near the fuse box?

Those types of issues sound like low voltage though, maybe the battery died.

I can't be mad that i didn't replace something in a timely manner, not that i knew it was this far bad. I'm just hoping there are no issues with valves. I won't be able to get the car away from the shop to check it out until at least Monday, so we'll see.

Just hoping it's the kit is all that's needed, and i get to learn from it, so i'm good. same with the crank sensor.

yeah, let's hope it's not damaged. I've seen cars bend valves and shoot the rockers out from under the cam shafts when that happens at higher rpms.

Replaced all the timing components, but the bitch guide bolt sheared off. drilled it out, found half the guide fell into the oil pan. now i'm dropping the oil pan to pull the piece of guide and reseal the pan.

Last BITCH of a problem, is that the crank gear key mushroomed a tiny bit trying to put it back in, and nowhere sells it. Dealer has to get it shipped in. If i'm lucky i'll get to drive it Friday.

What were you trying to put the crank gear back on with? Mine just slid on by hand.

gear went on fine, but there is the little key piece that locks it in place; that got bent up a bit

Ah, gotcha. Couldn't "un-mushroom" it with a bit of sanding?

lol, tried that, tried a file, i think when my dad got in there he just got a bit excited trying to get that in since it was close to the end and hit it harder than wanted.

At least when this stuff is done i'll have springs, bushings, rack spacers, and the tablet to throw in there to make me not want to burn it to the ground lol.
