Emissions Failure

Hi,

So today the State of Illinois failed my '05 SS/SC for emissions testing. The report states that my OBD is throwing P0172. Also mentioned is my Catalytic Converter Eff. is NOT READY. Any suggestions? Idealy, I want to try and fix it myself both for the fun in doing it and to save money, however, I also don't want to retest and fail again. If it helps, I have an Injen Intake and filter. Thanks for any help.

Not ready means that the system was likely reset recently. When i had my O2 sensor replaced it was nearly 3/4 of a tank before all tests showed ready so i could go in for emissions.

Your p0172 is a code for too rich which could be related to your intake. p0172 is usually a MAF issue. Not sure if that has a factor in your failed emissions. I wouldn't think so, but i could be wrong.

If youve been running rich for a while it may have damaged your cat which would cause the failed monitor

If you still have the stock intake system put that back on, the injen probably caused the rich code.

You'll have to drive around for a bit to make sure the systems reset. If you can find someone with HPtuners they can pull up the readiness monitors and see if they're OK

some of the craftsman scan tools will show readiness monitors too

Still there

I took it into my local shop and it turns out it was throwing a few other codes as well, such as misfire and O2 sensor. They replaced spark plugs which were faulty and put in a new O2 sensor. But the rich code is still there and they cant figure out why. they tried to put an aftermarket MAF on but its still throwing the code. Probably gonna take it to a dealer soon. any sugestions before i potentially pay thru the nose to pass emissions?

you can also buy an OBD2 bluetooth plugin for a few bucks on eBay and download the Android Torque app for like 4.99 It is worth it to pay for the full version. You can see all that information on your phone and datalog in realtime. Then you can even go back, look on Google Maps at your route where you started to run funny and look at a whole host of details that it logs.

I have one in all my cars... totally worth it.

What did you do with yours? if you tossed it you can prob pick one up here or in a junk yard

More than likely the rich code is from the intake. The car is MAF and VE based, so depending on if stock tune or not, changing how the car breaths affects the VE tables then if the MAF isn't seeing the same air flow as the stock or tuned MAF tables it can call for more or less air than actually needed.

You can generally pick a stock intake up for a decent price on here, throw up a wanted thread and see what you get.

I bought the car used last year with the check engine light already on. It only came with an injen intake and filter, not the stock. the original owner must have tossed it. With that being said, i'm not sure what kind of tunes were put on it, etc. But thanks for the info guys. Maybe ill try to get a stock intake before i take it to the dealer, or even take it to get looked at by a tuner.

when i got my car 07 2.0 ss/sc, it had an ebay cai, it always had the bank # rich code and cel, also ran like ****. i got a stock airbox from the classified section here and that fixed the issue. runs great and no code.

Gotcha, well luckily the intake is an Injen and the car runs really really nice. But, I also dont want the EPA knocking at my door so i suppose ill just throw a stock intake on for the test. Thanks Dave.

You can have two systems as not ready and still pass in IL, so that's fine, per say.

The big issue is the CEL. Get that to go out and you will pass.

Yeah not even worried about the systems now, i think im just gonna try and get ahold of a stock intake

^^^ not true, you will have a reject status on your results and have to retest. You can have only 1 monitor not ready if your vehicle is a 2005 or newer and if it's a 2004 or older up to 1995 you can have 2 monitors not ready.

Well im running an 05 and the only thing not ready are my cats which is fine since its only one. Jjust gotta clear the CEL

Once you clear your cel you have to go through a drive cycle to make sure your monitors go into a ready status.

Does anyone know how to reinstall the stock intake? Like I said, I bought the car with a CAI so I never actually did the job of taking the stock airbox and hose off
