engine (?) rattles

First of all the car has 2,500 miles and this noise started around 1,000....roughly.

I brought it into the dealership yesterday and I couldn't reproduce the noise, but it seems to be coming from the driver's rear of the engine. It's coming from between the clutch/brake fluid reservoir and engine (circled in red).

(click)

Any ideas? It comes and goes. It's either really loud or really quiet....never in between.

Lightbulb Rattling noise?

Had it happening on and off for first 30,000 miles on my 06 ss/sc. Of course dealer could never reproduce problem. Did you notice that if you pull the e-brake and pop the clutch in first gear a couple of times that the noise stops? It's called clutch chatter. Means you might have been a little 2 rough on the clutch to soon. I was. Actually needs a good five hundred mile break in before launches and full throttle engagement. Soon after 30 grand i went to a spec stg3 clutch and flywheel. I gave it a proper break in and no more chatter. Plus it bites like a pit bull. No slip at all. Would suggest stg2 or stg3 + models. Much easier to handle. P.S. The sooner u dispose of that garbage factory cluch the
better u will feel

Exclamation Update:

Noise (like plastic on metal almost) has progressed quite a bit since now that I'm at 16,600 miles......it's louder near the rear of the engine and amplifies inside the CPS housing (circled above). Used to occur maybe once or twice a week and now it rattles everyday at idle. If I slowly give it gas the noise will increase right around 1800 RPM and quit above that. It almost sounds like a heat shield rattling at that point.

Any thoughts on it possibly being a guide or tensioner? I know how easy it is for sound to travel and be misleading when diagnosing a noise. I don't hear much going on near the timing cover.

Wanted some input before I went tearing into it possibly next week. GM techline was zero help in this matter.

BTW, it's not the CPS housing. I thought maybe the bearing inside the housing for the reluctor wheel was bad, so I replaced it under warranty. No go.

I know this has to be a common problem!

Maybe you could pinpoint it using a mechanic stethascope(or use along screw driver with the handle pressed to your ear and the blade end touching the engine to pin point where the rattle is originating from.)

I have. That's the only thing I can come up with. I even talked to our engine guy at work and he's clueless. We hear it most at the back of the motor and where the camshaft position sensor housing is.

check the heat shield between the exhaust manifold and the steering shaft...mines snapped in half twice and rattles to ******* hell when it does...i think it snaps cuz of the torquing of the motor on full throttle launches...

i think my solution is gonna be to get a new shield and slot out the bolt holes and once i install it i wont tighten the bolts all the way...just snug with some loctite and hopefully it will allow for some movement under stress

Mr_Slobalt,

I got the exact same noise.

Its coming from the cam sensor housing.

We are two cobalt ss/sc with the same noise where I am.

My dealer order a new housing for the cam sensor and when they got it.Ill give you some feedback.

ps:they call tech line for info and they dont no what is it.

sorry just read that you replace the cam sensor housing!
The seconde cobalt do it all the time.So if they found something I PM you.

It's a cobalt thing, just ignore it. I ignore mine, also my Saturn redline I traded in for my cobalt also did it. Has yet to cause any issue with the performance of my car.

I wish I could ignore it...it's bad

but you're right about the performance side....doesn't affect it at all to my knowledge

The video you posted sounds a hell of a lot like the last 2 ecotech that came in my shop with no oil in them. I know thats not your problem seeing as how you've been well driving it. If I had to guess with a newer car and that type of noise in that area I as a mechanic would pull the valve cover and inspect the lifter/followers. One or more could have failed is some fashion and not be pumping up with oil pressure. The only things listed in dealerworld are the low oil pressure bulletin about proper filter installation and something about the upper fender at the A piller making a rattle noise. The fix is literally to remove the fender and glue the corner down. I really really doubt thats your problem. If its doing it consistently now and your initial complaint about the noise as at 2000 something miles then its documented and the dealer should have something to go on. Best of luck

Well here is the Video I made of my Ion Redline. This was part of the reason I traded it in for my SS. The SS does it too, but not as often.

dude my **** rattles when i start mine up every morning.. it sounds like a ratchet wrench, if youv ever hear it... it makes the sound for like 3 seconds and thats it. I took it in to the dealer and they couldnt reproduce the sound so they said its ok. it pisses me off though, cuz i wish i could get it to make the sound while at the dealership... i might just end up recording it with my cam corder and take it in to show em.

I've been so busy at work that I haven't had time to tear into. I'm hoping to do it this week and while the valve cover is off have the bodyshop paint it for me. My shop foreman just told me to order the revised tensioner, but I want to check it over before I do. I hate to just throw parts at it, y'know?

Yeah but you have to start eliminating parts somehow. I dont like doing it either but it can be a necessary step when dealing with "odd ball **** work".

How about trying to take the valve cover off, and then turn the engine on, and see if you see anything. Just a guess. I'm not an engine wiz, so I wouldn't know.
