I had same problem. Got my balt inspected and it failed. The problem is "lower non-load bearing ball-joint"
Hi everyone
My Cobalt's odometer just flipped 14,000 miles today and the older it gets, the louder this clunking noise gets. It sounds terrible--like a cheap car!--when you drive slow over bumps, pot holes, railroad tracks, etc. Drive fast and you don't hear it!
So I took it to Chevy a few weeks back and explained to my service advisor what I am hearing. It's the front suspension, I was told, and there is nothing he or Chevy can do about it. Apparantly, this problem has been in existance since the very first Cobalt and Chevy did repairs at $700 per car, until it got to be too expensive and Chevy decided no more until they can come up with a 'cheaper' fix (no pun intended).
Has anyone had this problem and was able to get it fixed? Has the noise returned? Shouldn't there be a Recall on this?
Another 14,000 miles and I'll either be bald from pulling my long hair out, or driving a Volkswagen!
Please, Chevy, fix my car!!!!

This is a common problem in almost every compact GM car that GM has made in the past 10+ years. My 03 Cavalier LS Sport had it, my ex-girlfriend's 04 Grand AM GT had it, I've drove two rentals from Enterprise that have also had this problem (05 Cobalt and 06 Ion). Ny neighbor's 04 Sunfire also experienced it.
It can be a number of things but more often that not it is the Sway Bar Bushings and/or the Strut Mount Seatings. They both make very similar noises. Just a common GM problem that has seemingly never been fixed over the years...

I've been dealing with this **** for forever now.
The dealershit I brought it to said they could not replicate the noise.
******* christ.
I'm sure I could put a monkey hopped up on PCP in my car and have it replicated.

Just want to let everyone know that my car over the winter started getting a rattle in the front suspension. I was getting my wheels balanced yesterday and discovered the problem. My left front sway bar link has gone bad. I have over 73,100 miles and don't drive on the best roads so I'm not surprised. I'll be fixing it on my own as they are not difficult to replace. Just wanted to mention it as I had gone on here before to see if anyone had a similar issue and I was told that it may be a strut tower bushing going bad so yeah....... wrong.
